#ICYMI: Babe Hatch interviewed Dr. Venice Haynes, PhD, MSPH, in “USofCare on the Maternal Health Journey – Get the Facts Straight – ” ‼️ Venice Haynes is our Senior Director of Research and Community Engagement, and she and the rest of her team have been listening – loudly – to the voices of mothers to figure out what they need during the postpartum period. Haynes encourages recognizing both the joy and happiness in postpartum as well as the anxiety and sadness. ❤️ “Joy encourages dialogue that is affirming, respectful, and culturally sensitive, promoting a more holistic approach to maternal health that considers the emotional, social, and cultural dimensions of Black women’s experiences.” We’re adopting a holistic approach for our #100weeks project, which advocates for a longer acknowledgment of the postpartum period. Mothers need support beyond just a 40-week pregnancy. Mothers can face mental health challenges at any time after having a baby, so they should receive ongoing care for as long as they need it. Have you read ___ ____________, yet? 💡🤔 To showcase the incredible work that we’ve done, we decided to take a ✨dynamic✨ approach. Meet 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, an immersive, interactive report that talks about all the work we’re doing. We’ve conducted listening work with thousands of people across the country to understand what people are facing and what they want in their health care. This is what we’ve 👂: ★ Postpartum care should be 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 and 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 for everyone Our #100weeks project redefines the journey of motherhood by pushing for an extension of the typical 40 week postpartum period. We’re looking at maternity care deserts and advocating for readily available maternal health services, regardless of geographical location. ★ State legislation should 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 and 𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 Washington and Oregon released bills that created public option insurance plans. In New Mexico and Maine, legislation passed that helps prevent surprise hospital billing. ★ AI could 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 health care, but people want more 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 We polled people to ask what they want to see from their policymakers in terms of AI in health care, and they want Congressional oversight. Public sentiment on AI is mixed, but some people are optimistic ★ People want culturally-responsive care from their providers We found that many Coloradans seeking this type of care were unable to receive it, and many experienced inadequate treatment. Respecting people’s cultural beliefs are important when receiving medical care. From our maternal health work to our state policy action, we’ve covered everything you need to know about our organizational impact. 🙌 Check out our report in the comment section!

Too often, discussions about AI in health care center around innovators and leading voices in technology. But when it comes to a topic that could drastically alter our health care system, we need to find out what people actually want in their care. That’s why we partnered with Morning Consult to find out everyday people’s opinions on AI in health. A few of our key findings: ⭑ People across political affiliations want AI use in health care to be regulated ⭑ People want transparency about their care and how AI is used in it ⭑ Comfort levels with AI are varied ⭑ Voters are equally optimistic and concerned ⭑ Black adults were more likely than any other race to prefer extensive use of AI tools Learn more about these findings, and others, in our (A)ccountable (I)nnovation Hub(link in the comments) ⤵️

Dr. Venice Haynes, PhD, MSPH, our Senior Director of Research and Community Engagement, spoke with Babe Hatch about how our 100 Weeks Project addresses the maternal health crisis by listening to the challenges faced by mothers, especially Black women, and implementing innovative solutions that support them from pre-pregnancy to one year postpartum. Here are some key quotes: 🔑 “Our listening work tells us that women need more support after their pregnancy, where they feel their care and assistance is severely diminished.” 🔑 “Black mothers are more than just statistics or victims; they experience joy, love, and triumphs like any other mothers.” 🔑 “Improving care during the postpartum period, when most maternal deaths occur, can reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, lay the foundation for better physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being for the mother, and improve the overall maternal health experience.” Check out the article in the comments to learn more about the maternal health journey and why long-term access to postpartum care is critically important.
