University Hospitals is all about helping people grow and progress in their careers, and no one knows that better than Seth O., Patient Care Nurse Assistant at UH Cleveland Medical Center. Seth began his career in environmental services (EVS), but quickly realized that he wanted to be more involved with bedside patient care. Seth began the Pathway to PCNA program, which is our workforce development program to help those who want to advance into a patient care role. It offers clinical skills training, patient/customer service practices, communication skills development, and more. Seth completed the Pathway to PCNA program and then progressed to the UH Medical Assistant (MA) Earn and Learn Program, in which UH pays for participants’ tuition and offers full-time wages as they prepare to obtain their Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification upon completion of the program. From there, Seth was hired at Bolwell Family Medicine, and he's currently enrolled in the UH LPN Earn and Learn Program and intends to become an RN. “My favorite thing about UH is the wonderful work environment and the equal opportunity to grow," shared Seth. “UH has incredible career ladders and everyone is welcome to climb. I can't wait to be part of the UH nursing team!” We’re proud to support our caregivers as they advance and grow in their careers, and our career ladder exists to help our team members keep progressing and learning. If you’re interested in a nursing career where you can make a difference and grow along the way, check out available opportunities at University Hospitals. https://lnkd.in/ezzxD664 #UHNursing #UHCareers

When a patient needs a cardiac stress test, they want the process to run smoothly and without delays. They’re likely feeling anxious over needing the test at all, so they want it completed in a timely way, with results pointing to prompt next steps. UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute interventional cardiologist Marwan Nasif, MD, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at UH Lake West and UH TriPoint medical centers and recently named Chief of Medicine, is laser-focused on meeting these expectations for patients. “Dr. Nasif shows professionalism by ensuring that he takes care of the patient, avoids further wait times and helps to keep our workflow running smooth,” says UH registered respiratory therapist Brittany Bertram. “We are so grateful that he is part of our team.” Beyond ensuring timely tests, Dr. Nasif says the rapid, immediate impact he’s able to have for his interventional cardiology patients keeps him motivated in his leadership roles at UH Lake West and UH TriPoint. “I love taking care of patients where after my intervention, they leave the cath lab smiling,” he says. “It's amazing. In a short period, we can take them from the most suffocating, worst pain in the world to leaving the cath lab without pain and saving their lives.” Read more about Dr. Nasif at https://lnkd.in/g9baMdCs #cardiacstresstest #cathlab #hearthealth #physicianexcellence #patientsfirst

Congratulations to UH Chief Diversity, Equity & Belonging Officer Celina Cunanan, MSN, APRN-CNM, FACNM, who was named an individual winner in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion category of the Crain's Cleveland Business Excellence in HR Awards. #UHProud According to Crain’s, “Closing equity gaps is at the heart of Celina Cunanan’s transformational tenure at University Hospitals. In just two years of DEI leadership, Cunanan has established six Employee Resource Groups, brought bias training to more than 5,500 caregivers and launched new educational initiatives, including more than 35 one-page “micro-learnings” focused on subjects such as microaggressions, stereotypes and inclusive team building, the nomination said. Outside UH, Cunanan expanded UH’s Food for Life markets to five under-resourced neighborhoods – an initiative recognized with the American Hospital Association’s 2024 Dick Davidson NOVA Award – and championed the opening of a wellness clinic in Glenville. She also has bolstered external efforts to bring more Black and Brown representation to the medical field by advancing a high school health scholars program and strengthening medical school partnerships that, among other things, facilitate mentoring and networking opportunities between UH professional and minority students.” In the nomination, Daniel Simon, MD, President of Academic & External Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer for the University Hospitals, Ernie and Patti Novak Distinguished Chair in Healthcare Leadership, said Cunanan provides “the rationale for the recruitment of a diverse and inclusive workforce within a culture of belonging” by reminding leadership “of published studies that racial concordance between caregiver and patient improves healthcare outcomes and patient experience.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g8tJ5A7r #diversity #equity #inclusion #belonging #employeeresourcegroups #foodforlife

The wildly popular glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) agonists for weight loss, such as semaglutide, liraglutide and tirzepatide, require doubling down on scientific expertise to better understand their effects and implications. That’s the view of UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute’s Ian Neeland, MD, FAHA, FACC, Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Prevention and Director of the Center for Integrated and Novel Approaches in Vascular-Metabolic Disease (CINEMA). Dr. Neeland is making important contributions in this regard. He’s conducting novel studies into these medicines and helping guide the clinical recommendations for heart and vascular specialists who want to offer them to their patients. He is Vice Chair of the American Heart Association’s guideline writing committee on implementing obesity science into clinical practice, which recently published its scientific statement in the journal Circulation. Dr. Neeland is also doing crucial research into the effects of GLP-1s on muscle composition. Although some have feared that these medications would adversely affect muscle composition, putting older patients at risk of loss of muscle mass and falls, that’s not what his research is showing, he says. “These medications may actually improve muscle composition, because even though you might lose muscle mass with weight loss, the fat and the quality of the muscle may improve with the medication,” he says. Dominic Sanniti, DO, had never thought about becoming a physician until he took an elective class at Kenston High School, one that involved animal dissection and learning about anatomy and physiology. “That’s when I fell in love with the science behind medicine, and realized the challenge of interlinking everything that was going on in the body,” he says. Today, he values the human aspect of providing care just as much, if not more. Sometimes, he says, science is the easy part. “The most satisfying thing, especially in family medicine, is that you get to take care of the whole family, you get to be the doctor for everyone -- from the newly born, to a child or adult with strep throat, or for someone who has been diagnosed with cancer,” he says. Dr. Sanniti’s practice is based in Middlefield, and most of his patients are Amish. That means there are cultural differences and some genetically based illnesses and conditions that are more common among Amish people. Some people affectionately refer to him as a ‘country doctor,’ but Dr. Sanniti’s role at UH goes far beyond that. Besides having an extremely busy practice and being on-call for deliveries 24 hours a day, 14 days each month, he is Chair of Medicine at UH Geauga Medical Center, and Medical Director of the UH Geauga Pediatrics/Newborn Nursery. Read more about Dr. Sanniti at https://lnkd.in/gXRD__XF. #primarycare #familymedicine #Amishhealthcare #community #patientsfirst
