New University of Colorado Boulder research shows that flecks of DNA left behind by viruses that infected our primate ancestors can play a critical role in helping cancer survive and thrive. “Our study shows that diseases today can be significantly influenced by these ancient viral infections that until recently very few researchers were paying attention to,” said senior author Edward Chuong, PhD, a University of Colorado Cancer Center member and an assistant professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology at the University of Colorado BioFrontiers Institute. In partnership with the Center for Health, Work, and Environment at the Colorado School of Public Health, a new program launched by the CU Cancer Center aims to provide comprehensive support to cancer patients as they balance work responsibilities and treatment. “Cancer often strikes people at the prime of their careers, when they are contributing the most to their communities and society as a whole. This project has the potential to greatly improve the situation by tapping into the expertise of occupational health experts to help cancer patients who want to keep working and supporting their families," says Wells Messersmith, MD, associate director of clinical services at the CU Cancer Center. “I tell patients that sarcomas are like snowflakes,” says Breelyn Wilky, MD, a CU Cancer Center member and associate professor of medical oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. With a $5.2 million grant renewal, a team of cancer researchers that includes CU Cancer Center's Associate Director of Informatics and Data Science Sean Davis, MD, PhD, will continue to expand the Bioconductor ecosystem, a cornerstone resource for statistical analysis and data management in cancer genomics research. “Thousands of cancer researchers already rely on Bioconductor, and this award offers new opportunities for adding new capabilities to Bioconductor, attracting new users through outreach and education, and advancing research capabilities for the cancer research community,” says Davis. CU Cancer Center member Maria Amaya, MD, PhD, is looking at how to improve treatment methods for acute myeloid leukemia with fellow CU researchers. “We think the reason why this leukemia is so aggressive, and why we have a difficult time healing these patients, is because they have these leukemia populations called leukemia stem cells,” Amaya said. “When patients develop leukemia, they have a leukemia stem cell that can give rise to the whole disease, which is what we call the myeloblast.” Learn more about the leukemia research Amaya is a part of here: https://lnkd.in/gJrqwe4r #LeukemiaAwareness #Leukemia #CancerResearch #Oncology

“I’m so thrilled to be here,” says Sapna Patel, MD, a widely renowned melanoma oncologist and clinical investigator, who has joined the CU Cancer Center. "It's a place that has a clear vision to conquer cancer, where hope meets healing, and every day we have the chance to advance the care and treatment of patients with cancer.” It’s a return to Colorado for Patel, who served her internship and residency at what was then the CU Health Sciences Center in Denver in the mid-2000s before heading back to Texas, where she grew up, for her fellowship and career. “I always thought that I’d come back to Colorado at some point,” she says.
