USA Fencing is the home of fencing in the U.S. — supporting everyone from newcomers to Olympians and Paralympians.
About us
We're the home of fencing in the United States — supporting newcomers, Olympians and Paralympians, and anyone who loves this wonderful sport. The Amateur Sports Act of 1978 named the United States Olympic Committee (now the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, or USOPC) as the coordinating body for amateur athletic activity in the U.S. directly relating to international Olympic and Paralympic athletic competition. The Act included provisions for recognizing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) for the sports on the programs of the Olympic, Paralympic and Pan American Games. USA Fencing is the recognized NGB for the sport of fencing in the United States. But our history goes much farther back than that. USA Fencing was founded in 1891 as the Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) by a group of New York fencers seeking independence from the Amateur Athletic Union. The AFLA changed its name to the United States Fencing Association in 1981. USA Fencing is affiliated with the Féderation Internationale d'Escrime (FIE), the international federation for fencing founded in Paris in 1913. USA Fencing was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in Pennsylvania in 1964 and in Colorado in 1993 in compliance with the Amateur Sports Act and opened its national office in Colorado Springs, Colo., in August of 1982. Today, we call Colorado Springs our home but have members of our staff living across the country.

16-year-old saber fencer Ruth Mund traveled to Benin, West Africa, to share her love of fencing with local youth. Now, she’s calling on fellow fencers to help create training videos and donate equipment to support Beninese fencers. "Others have helped me get closer to my dreams," she says. "It's time for me to do the same for someone else." Read Ruth's story to see the power of sports to connect people — and how you can be an important part. Let’s support her mission!

What fencer hasn't been asked what they'd charge to enclose someone's backyard in cedar planks? In that spirit, we're proud to welcome Superior Fence & Rail as the Official Fence of Fencers! (Nailed it!)

We are saddened to announce the passing of Branimir “Ben” Zivkovic, an icon in the world of fencing. Zivkovic's indomitable spirit and love of the sport touched countless lives. Ben Zivkovic served as the head coach for Harvard's fencing teams for 23 years, where he not only led his athletes to numerous victories but also promoted the status of women’s fencing. Under his leadership, Harvard saw two NCAA champions (Jim O’Neill and Kwame van Leeuwen) and an Olympian (Greg Chang, Athens 2004) emerge from its ranks. He also wrote the literal book on Harvard fencing, helping celebrate the program's centennial in 1989 with "Le Grand Salut: One Hundred Years of Harvard Fencing." A 2023 inductee into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame, Zivkovic was a celebrated inventor whose innovations transformed fencing equipment worldwide. Since founding Zivkovic Modern Fencing Equipment in 1974, he introduced groundbreaking designs such as the raised aluminum strips used in major competitions and the transparent visor mask, now displayed in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. Before his remarkable tenure at Harvard, Zivkovic coached at Salle Santelli, West Point, Columbia and Fairfield. He was a national champion of Yugoslavia and represented his country in five world championships. His journey as a fencing master began in 1953, culminating in a storied career that spanned continents and decades. Zivkovic's legacy as a coach, fencer and innovator will forever inspire us. We mourn his loss while celebrating his immense impact on our sport.
