Fed Scoop: "The Transportation Department is doubling down on GPS technology, announcing a series of new investments last week that are meant to help boost the reliability of positioning, navigation and timing services. Companies focused on terrestrial radio frequency, map matching, time over fiber, and low-Earth orbit technologies were awarded contracts — which totaled more than $7.2 million — following a DOT request for information last year to identify alternatives to GPS technologies." tinyurl.com/4ymkc732

The U.S. Department of Transportation SMART program's Madeline Zhu is inspired by all of the projects she's visited in Southern California! Read about her travels and the cool people she's met - thanks, Madeline! And thanks to our SMART grantees!
I'm a few weeks behind, but finally catching up on my amazing visit to all 7 SMART projects in southern California! In 3 days, I got to meet the dedicated teams leading and supporting the projects for Orange County Transportation Authority, City of Anaheim, LADOT, Southern California Regional Rail Authority, Los Angeles Metro, and the City of Fontana. One of the things you realize when you visit teams in person is just how many people any single project encompasses - and how much passion and energy they are putting towards their goal. It was a pleasure to get to learn more about these projects, from life-saving track intrusion detection on the Metrolink Rails, to helping the rapidly growing City of Fontana cope with an explosion of heavy truck traffic, to moving Angelenos to their favorite events via transit in preparation for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic games. Big thanks to all my hosts and the many folks who took the time to meet with me, a small sampling of which include: Alicia Y., Denise Sifford, John Thai, Zackary Campos, Tom Schamber, CPA, Avital Shavit, Jewel DeGuzman, Henry Phipps, Mehul Malhotra, and Ruben Hovanesian.

Nine technology vendors recently were awarded a total of $7 million for Complementary Positioning, Navigation and Timing Technologies. "This effort comes at a time when occurrences of jamming and spoofing of Global Navigation Satellite Services, especially GPS, is prevalent in conflict zones, causing disruption, denial, and manipulation of PNT services, thereby increasing concerns for safety across all modes of transportation and for the security of U.S. critical infrastructure."
