In honor of Labor Day, the USFN offices are closed today and will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, September 3. Labor Day honors the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement. The day also marks the unofficial end of summer and is often associated with picnics, parades, and various recreational activities. The holiday was first celebrated in the late 19th century to recognize the labor movement’s role in improving working conditions and advocating for workers' rights. It serves as a tribute to the social and economic achievements of workers past, present, and future. Since 1973, Women's Equality Day has been celebrated annually on August 26 to commemorate the certification of the 19th Amendment, which gave some women the right to vote. It wasn't until the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that all American women regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity, were able to vote. Women's Equality Day celebrates the achievements of women's rights activists and reminds us of the hurdles overcome by those women who faced violence and discrimination to propel the women's movement forward. It's been over 100 years since women won the right to vote and 50 years since American women could have their own credit cards, but there is still work to do.
