The U.S. Plastics Pact is thrilled to announce the release of Roadmap 2.0! Building upon Roadmap to 2025, Roadmap 2.0 continues carrying forward the Targets, Outcomes, and Deliverables not yet fully achieved, pushing further those that have been successful, and implementing new, necessary objectives born from what was learned during the original strategic plan. Roadmap 2.0 was designed to drive transformative change and accelerate progress across the entire plastics value chain to address plastic waste at its source and enable a just transition to a circular economy. By working together across the plastics value chain, Activators have already: — Decreased problematic and unnecessary materials from packaging from 14% to 8% — Increased the amount of reusable, recyclable, or compostable plastic packaging placed on the market from 37% to 47.7% — Increased use of postconsumer recycled content or responsibly sourced biobased content in plastic packaging from 7% to 9.4% As with the original Roadmap to 2025, these new Targets are interconnected; the success of one Target relies on the successful progress of the others. Evolved from its predecessor, the Targets of Roadmap 2.0 include: 1️⃣ Eliminate all items on the Problematic and Unnecessary Materials List and reduce the use of virgin plastic by 30% by 2030 2️⃣ Design and manufacture 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable 3️⃣ Effectively recycle 50% of plastic packaging and establish the necessary framework to recycle or compost packaging at scale 4️⃣ Achieve an average of 30% postconsumer recycled content or responsibly sourced biobased content across all plastic packaging 5️⃣ Identify viable reusable packaging systems and increase their implementation and scale by 2030, as part of reducing the use of virgin plastic The U.S. Plastics Pact and our Activators continue working towards a future where plastics and packaging exist within a circular economy. #RoadmapTo2025 #RoadmapToCircularity #USPlasticsPact Read Roadmap 2.0 today: https://lnkd.in/gcV8mD7

Creating a path forward to realize a circular economy for plastics in the United States.
About us
The U.S. Plastics Pact is bringing together businesses, government entities, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders to work collectively toward a common vision of a circular economy for plastics, as outlined by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Initiative. This vision aims to ensure that plastics never become waste by eliminating the plastics we don’t need, innovating to ensure that the plastics we do need are reusable, recyclable, or compostable, and circulating all the plastic items we use to keep them in the economy and out of the environment.

As we navigate the complexities of establishing a circular economy for plastics and packaging, Plastics News' Don Loepp highlights the U.S. Plastics Pact Activators' commitment to perseverance, transparency, and accountability — despite unmet sustainability targets. In fact, the extension of our ambitious 2030 deadlines underscores continuous opportunities in collaboration and innovation. The deliverables of the US Plastics Pact require collective effort from brands, retailers, and consumers — and our Activators are determined to meet our collective goals. Loepp writes, "These are still ambitious goals, and now I think the Pact members have a better idea how to achieve them. That's encouraging. I remember plenty of cases from previous decades where industry and brand owners quietly stepped away from sustainability goals once they realized they were too expensive or difficult to achieve." With Roadmap 2.0 on the horizon, we have the chance to reassess our strategies and reinforce our commitments. It's time to focus on tangible actions to ensure environmental and social justice, enhance infrastructure, develop alternative materials, and foster circularity. Exciting news! U.S. Plastics Pact Activator Kraft Heinz has announced its groundbreaking transition to 100% recycled PET bottles for Kraft Real Mayo and Miracle Whip products. This move is part of the company's larger commitment to reduce the use of virgin plastic in its packaging by 20% by 2030, a goal that aligns with the U.S. Plastics Pact's updated Target 1 of Roadmap 2.0. By making the switch to 100% rPET, Kraft Heinz will eliminate approximately 14 million pounds of virgin plastic. Consumers can now find the new 12- and 22-oz rPET bottles of Kraft Real Mayo and Miracle Whip on shelves, and Kraft Heinz plans to transition all other container sizes by the end of 2024. Kudos to Kraft Heinz for their circular packaging solutions! As said by Activator Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), circularity begins with design! Check out their APR Design® Guide for Plastics Recyclability and testing protocols to measure each aspect of a package design against industry-accepted criteria. https://lnkd.in/eaQ8r6q #designforcircularity
Did you know that by meeting APR Preferred status, you can avoid the "problematic" design elements identified by the US Plastics Pact? Don't put this off! Meeting your sustainability commitments starts with design. https://ow.ly/pZpc50Syt5g

Kudos to Activator Closed Loop Partners's Center for the Circular Economy on leading this reuse initiative and other Activator The Coca-Cola Company for participating in it! #reuse
Today, we are excited to announce The Petaluma Reusable Cup Project, from the #NextGen Consortium, led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners! Beginning August 5, global brands including Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet's Coffee, Yum! Brands are joining forces with local restaurants in the City of Petaluma, CA, to swap single-use cups for to-go reusable cups to all customers at no cost, with widespread return points available across the city. This unprecedented initiative makes reusable to-go cups the default option across multiple restaurants in a U.S. city, with the opportunity to drive more customers to reuse and displace hundreds of thousands of single-use cups. Congratulations to Activator Upstream for this well-deserved recognition in leading the reuse movement across the US! Your work is key in establishing a circular economy for packaging. 👏
🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 We are thrilled to share that Upstream has been selected as one of 20 recipients in Phase 1 of the Re-X Before Recycling Prize! 🎉 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched the Re-X Before Recycling Prize, a three-phase competition designed to develop innovative ways to extend the lifetimes of products or parts via reusing, repairing, refurbishing, remanufacturing, or repurposing (“Re-X”) before recycling. With this funding, Upstream (along with our friends at PR3 | the Global Alliance to Advance Reuse and other amazing organizations) can continue our work to create systems where foodware and consumer goods are returned, washed and reintegrated into a robust reuse system. “Reuse systems are a unique economic model that need high upfront investment in logistics and infrastructure. We’re going to use this prize to uncover the financial linchpins to making those reuse systems possible in every city." says Crystal Dreisbach, Upstream's CEO 💫 Read more at https://lnkd.in/edRhhzvH ✨ #upstreamsolutions #weheartreuse #betterwaythanthrowaway #reusewins #rex
