America's Innovation Agency

About us

For over 200 years, the basic role of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has remained the same: to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution). Under this system of protection, American industry has flourished. New products have been invented, new uses for old ones discovered, and employment opportunities created for millions of Americans. The strength and vitality of the U.S. economy depends directly on effective mechanisms that protect new ideas and investments in innovation and creativity. The continued demand for patents and trademarks underscores the ingenuity of American inventors and entrepreneurs. The USPTO is at the cutting edge of the Nation’s technological progress and achievement. The USPTO is a federal agency in the Department of Commerce. The USPTO occupies several interconnected buildings in Alexandria, Virginia. The office employs more than 13,000 people -- including engineers, scientists, attorneys, analysts, computer specialists -- all dedicated to protecting U.S. intellectual property rights. At the USPTO, the talents of all our colleagues enrich our vibrant workplace, and we celebrate and value each one.

Working alongside National Inventors Hall of Fame and its Collegiate Inventors Competition and Camp Invention program, inventor Sumita Mitra says she is excited about the future. “I’m confident that our legacy will be left in good hands,” she said. “It's so refreshing to be with them. They are so curious and they want to learn. It's just a joy to be with these kids and to think they're the future of our society." Just like the next generation of inventors she described, Mitra upheld her own curiosity through her adult years. What started as a pilot program with eight employees has grown into a go-to destination for trademark customers powered by 27 skilled professionals.    In 1994, we opened our Trademark Assistance Center (TAC) to support anyone with a question about the trademark registration process. We started collecting data on calls received in 2002, when our team answered 76,000 calls. In 2023, our team answered 116,000 calls and 24,000 emails – that’s an 84% increase.       The center can’t give legal advice, but can give updates on your application, answer specific questions and help you navigate our website.     Learn more about the center: https://bit.ly/3Sao3NH  #ProtectWhatYouLove #30YearsOfService #30YearsOfTAC

Can you identify this well-known invention? > The inventor wanted to make one of “miniature size [...] which will fit inside an ordinary shirt pocket.” > The invention aimed to consume a minimum of current and use it at maximum efficiency. > You may not know an emitter resistor from a bias voltage, but if you tune in to this patent, you can still make beautiful music. 🎵 > Today is National ______ Day. Did you know that IP offices around the world collaborate year-round to tackle our toughest, shared challenges in IP? Recently, USPTO Commissioner for Patents, Vaishali Udupa and a team of senior staff met with senior officials from European Patent Office and Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt (DPMA) in Munich, Germany to discuss challenges and opportunities related to improving patent pendency and customer experience. They also addressed the USPTO’s guidance on AI and explored new, innovative tools to support domestic and international filing processes. We look forward to continuing these productive discussions with EPO officials in the near future. The USPTO delegation also hosted a listening session with local stakeholders, BMW and Siemens, two of the largest companies in the region that hold U.S. patents. We extend a huge thank you to our counterparts and to our customers for graciously hosting us. See you again soon!

We offer support and opportunities to connect throughout all levels. 🙌 The Supervisory Patent Examiners and Classifiers Organization (SPECO) is a Voluntary Employee Organization open to managers in Patents. SPECO hosts social, education, and other outreach events, including participating in a team that creates LEGO experiments and introduces local students to the joys of science. SPECO also recognizes exceptional leaders with the annual Norman Morgenstern award. 🏆 Eileen Lillis of the Central Reexamination Unit received the 2024 award. Eileen’s contributions to the agency have been numerous and varied, including serving at the Patent Training Academy, working hand-in-hand with our patent professionals union, and acting as a Workforce Management Advisor. #TeamUSPTO
