Today is #NationalWomen'sEqualityDay, the anniversary of three generations of an unrelenting and courageous political campaigning of women when, in 1920 we won the right to vote. This day emphasizes the importance of women’s work for democracy. Today I want to highlight the important work women do in the armed forces. Women receive equal pay for equal work and serve in most military roles, providing them more career advancement opportunities. Do you know the women Veterans in your community? If not, I encourage you to listen closely and inquire if you suspect a woman may have served. A good place to start is to ask a woman married to a military man if she ever served. I told James Mayer during my interview on his “The Manufacturing Culture” podcast that being a civilian Veteran Champion is not “Rocket Science, it's People Science.” A discussion that focused on workplace culture, we emphasized that It’s important when supporting Veterans to go beyond words and act by actively listening, building personal relationships, offering practical support, and cultivating a sense of belonging. James is convinced that combining this approach with the benefits Veterans bring to manufacturing like a safety mindset, operational discipline, leadership skills, and technical aptitudes offers great talent potential for small to medium-sized manufacturers. Do you know someone who was a victim of terrorism? Let’s pause today to honor those whose lives are changed forever by acts of terrorism. This includes (directly and indirectly) many military people and their families. In 2017, the United Nations General Assembly designated August 21 as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. That year alone, nearly 75% of all terrorism-related deaths occurred in just five countries. These countries included Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalis, and Syria.
