🛌 Midd Innovation Alumni Entrepreneur update 📍 Biggabed is a Midd-student-founded business that provides a full-service product that turns the standard Twin-XL beds in the dorms into a more comfortable Full-XL bed, adding 16” of space. They now serve students at 19 (!!!) schools across the US, have a wonderful team of over 25 Campus Directors across these locations, and will improve sleep for over 700 students this upcoming school year. Biggabed was founded at Middlebury College in our very own Hadley hall by Adam W., originally class of 2022 who “febbed” due to COVID. As a first year in 2019, Wisco was tired of sleeping in the Twin-XL beds in the dorms. After some late-night chats in the dorms with close friends and hallmates where the idea originated, Wisco went about pursuing an initial prototype. The very first version was designed in the FIC Makerspace and made of 3D printed “hooks” and broken hockey sticks, which Wisco had access to as a member of the Men’s Hockey team. After receiving the hub’s MiddChallenge summer grant, Wisco continued prototyping. After plenty of pitching to make initial sales in the first year of operation at Midd, Biggabed rented just over 80 beds for its first year of operation in 2019-2020. That winter, Wisco joined MiddEntrepreneurs, an Innovation Hub J-Term class taught by Sam Roach-Gerber and David Bradbury of VCET. Wisco says, “That class was an integral part in helping turn Biggabed into an actual functioning company, instead of just a project that I begged my friends to use. Looking back on it now, every single one of those lessons and ideas discussed has been utilized by Biggabed over the last few years.” With its continued growth five years in, Biggabed is facing new organizational challenges including competitors, scaling manufacturing, finding people to run Biggabed at new schools, and the cost of expansion. Wisco says, “The whole point of Biggabed is to be run by students, for students. I want Campus Directors at all our schools to take ownership and have an entrepreneurial experience running the business, just like I did. Here at Middlebury, we’ve become and will continue to grow as a core part of the Midd community, which is my proudest accomplishment by far.” You can still order a Biggabed at Middlebury for this upcoming year, although they’re almost sold out, and the team is always looking for Campus Directors to start Biggabed at new locations. It’s #Inc5000 day! We’re excited to celebrate for the second year in a row. Widewail ranked 1,401 out of the top 5000 fastest-growing private companies in America, with a 3-year growth rate of 366%. In Advertising & Marketing, we ranked 123. In Vermont, 4. Yesterday, we talked to Widewail CEO Matt Murray about the trends he is seeing in our industry and what businesses need to do to set themselves apart. Top 2024 reputation management trends: >> The pace of M&A is driving the need for centralization of marketing services. >> Advancements in technology enable Widewail clients to access deeper voice of the customer insights. >> We observe a continued lack of trust in institutions and corporations, making past customer feedback essential in the decision-making process for consumers. Matt went into a lot of detail here, so we’ve posted any overflow content in the comments. Alright, let’s get into it. TREND 1 >> The pace of M&A is driving the need for centralization of marketing services. According to the 2024 Blue Sky Report by Kerrigan Advisors, the Q1 2024 automotive dealership buy/sell market hit record transaction levels, up 38% over Q1 2023. Here’s Matt’s take: “The right marketing tech stack allows operations at scale. So there's the cheesy old cliche: inspect what you expect. You can't do this as a dealership group owner if you don't have common definitions of activities across your points. This is done with a common website platform, advertising provider, or reputation management provider. If you've got the right technology across all of your points using the same definitions of behavior, it's easy to identify opportunities for improvement, something that Widewell's really good at surfacing. We can tell a dealer, let's say the dealership group owner: 'Hey, these three stores deliver a fantastic customer experience. You've got a couple of points over here who could do better, specifically regarding wait time and communication.' That wasn't possible even five years ago.” Who will win? Table Stakes: The industry-standard strategy here is now executing on the four pillars of reputation reasonably well: review volume, frequency, quality, and responding. Leaders: This cohort separates themselves with a feedback flywheel. Voice of the customer data informs operational tweaks, which improve reviews, which attract more customers, etc. Using Widewail’s topic analytics tools, those that dig into trends and refresh processes are the companies we are likely to see building a competitive advantage. Which gets us to trend #2, posted in the comments (character limit) ->
