#VCUSSW Ph.D. student Sam Ochinang grew up in a military family and has found his calling at the intersection of social work and serving as an active-duty Army major with the Medical Service Corps. “My journey in the Ph.D. program, along with my position, will improve my technical and managerial skills to influence organizations and future leaders,” he says. Ochinang was recently recognized at the annual MEDCoE (US Army Medical Center of Excellence) Graduate School Research and Education Symposium, where his presentation on impulsivity and suicide among first-year college students won the Best Research Abstract award. “I see my research as a tribute or an ode to the individual struggling with suicide, and the families, friends, the community in general,” he says. “ I just want to do my part.” Full story: https://lnkd.in/ecRpecGH

Congratulations to #VCUSSW's Denise Burnette, Ph.D., our Wurtzel Endowed Chair in Social Work; and two-time alum David Conley, PhD, MSW (M.S.W.'14; Ph.D.'20) of the University of North Carolina Wilmington School of Social Work for their presentations at the Together Against Stigma 2024 conference in Reykjavík, Iceland! Dr. Burnette's presentation was titled “The role of stigma in help-seeking for 'memory loss' by older adults and their carers in India”; Dr. Conley's was titled “Structural stigma's impact on mental health-related legislation." The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) sponsors the event.

Congratulations to our recent doctoral graduate Seon Kim (Ph.D.'24), who has earned the one of the VCU Graduate School's Distinguished Dissertation Awards for 2023-24! Dr. Kim's dissertation was titled "Neighborhood, home, and community-based services (HCBS), and older adults' health in Virginia." Dr. Kim is working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Drexel University Urban Health Collaborative.
