In the 7 years since its launch, the Professional Fighters League has gone from a vision in the mind of founder/Chairman Donn Davis into a top-tier global MMA force, & one of the most rapidly-growing sports leagues in the world. ViewLift has been a PFL partner for PFL's entire existence, but 2 Fridays ago, my youngest son and I got the chance to see the foundation of all of that excitement, when we attended a playoff set of bouts at DC’s Anthem. Whether you’re an MMA master or someone who has yet to experience the action in the octagon, we’d really urge you to check out how PFL is innovating – in the ring and for the fans. Here are a few pictures and observations: ·     PFL provides a top-level entertainment experience. The Anthem was packed – at least 3,000 fans – & as you’ll see in the quick video and pictures, it is a 5-senses experience. ESPN is PFL’s US distributor, & with the network feed playing on large monitors, the relative experience was like most sports: at-home is better for detailed views of in-cage action, but less thrilling than being in person. ·     PFL fans range the full gamut, from pros to newbies. The crowd was pumped up but more joyous and less confrontative than many NFL stands. ·     This playoff offered 10 bouts in 2 weight classes, with the winners advancing towards finals – and $1M purses. ·     Every fight was competitive, something that’s unusual in (say) a night of boxing. ·     You don’t need to know any of the sports that make up MMA to appreciate the incredible athleticism of the fighters. And the playoffs we attended were also a promotional opportunity to point to the 10/19 Battle of the Giants on DAZN: the heavyweight championship between Francis Ngannou & Renan Ferreira. These 2 are incredible fighters – anyone seeing them interviewed in the ring, squashing #JakePaul (a big man) between them, got a visceral sense of two huge and frightening foes. (Both men mingled during the evening, and couldn’t have been more accessible to & friendly with the fans. Just don’t ever get into a ring with either of them.) ·     Fighters & fans are intersecting throughout the evening. And the runway for entrances of each fight’s combatants, low-fiving the fans clustered around, was much more immediate and impactful than walk-ons in any other sport. ·     Mike and I had a great experience. ·     I expect that next season, PFL will provide a 2nd-screen streaming experience for fans at home that will complement and extend TVs in-ring action: fun explanations of the scoring system determining winners; greater use of the data that PFL generates but can’t show in-venue or on-TV; opportunities for the growing PFL community to connect during the events and thereafter – trading insights & trash-talk, comparing their predictive abilities, and in general, being central to the PFL experience.
