The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is owned and operated by the Virginia Historical Society — a private, non-profit organization established in 1831. The historical society is the oldest cultural organization in Virginia, and one of the oldest and most distinguished history organizations in the nation. For use in its state history museum and its renowned research library, the historical society cares for a collection of nearly nine million items representing the ever-evolving story of Virginia. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is proud to launch this major, statewide civics education program for middle grade students — a legacy project of VMHC’s 250th Initiative. Born from years of related work by the VMHC and its John Marshall Center for Constitutional History & Civics (JMC), Civics Connects offers a robust array of best-in-class educational tools designed with significant input from Virginia educators at every level. This classroom-ready resource, available to all Virginia students at no cost, will include lesson plans, interactive slides, video shorts, classroom activities, and special museum experiences. Civics Connects will rely on a Civics Ambassador Corps selected from all areas across the state who will pilot and promote the program beginning with the upcoming 2024–25 academic year.
