About us
The Department of Computer Science is part of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, ranked No. 13 for its undergraduate program, moving the college upward in this national ranking against peers and aspirational peers. Founded in 1970, the department has an energetic and engaged faculty of 60 tenured, tenure-track, and teaching faculty members. We have a strong tradition of interdisciplinary research with 16 NSF CAREER Award winners. The department is ranked #31 for its undergraduate program and 40th for its graduate program by U.S. News & World Report. By the Numbers: • 90% of students have jobs before graduation • 1,200 undergraduate students (sophomore-senior) • 114 master’s and 180 Ph.D students • $12 million in total research expenditures (2019-2020) The Department of Computer Science is committed to excellence in diversity and has been a champion of promoting underrepresented populations in STEM for decades. Since 2007 the percentage of undergraduate women enrolled in our program has risen from 4 percent to 18 percent and our number of women teaching faculty has risen from four to nine. We also have a strong presence at leading diversity-focused conferences such as Tapia and the Grace Hopper Celebration where our students have been recognized not only for their commitment to diversity, but also for their comprehensive research. We also boast strong corporate and industry partnerships through the CS|Source with over 90 companies that participate in spring and fall career fairs, numerous student engagement opportunities, and capstone sponsorship.

Engineering research at Virginia Tech is about to get even better. The Virginia Tech Division of Information Technology has recently made a new high-performance computing system available through their Advanced Research Computing unit. This new software will increase the amount of detail in data simulations, turn around the results of research more quickly, and conduct more simultaneous calculations, among other initiatives.
