Meet the new WWT Project Associate Kyle Hill! 🌊 Kyle works out of our Ellensburg office and focuses on streamflow conservation projects in the Yakima and Klickitat project areas. He's earning a Master of Cultural and Environmental Resource Management degree at Central Washington University in Fall 2024. 🎓 Kyle has worked for the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife implementing noxious weed programs in Kittitas County and for the King County Dept. of Natural Resources and Parks as part of the Washington Conservation Corps. 🌱 He enjoys hiking, spending time with his family, and all things Seattle sports. Kyle likes getting out on the water and once canoed 100 miles down the Missouri River through Montana. Wow! 👏 We're excited to have Kyle at Washington Water Trust and expand our work for healthy rivers together. Welcome Kyle! 💙

Fish passage and safety is improving in Icicle Creek! Our project partners Cascade Orchard Irrigation Company (COIC) and Chelan County broke ground on a new high-efficiency irrigation pump station. Important flows will now remain instream in this 2.5 mile stretch of the creek benefiting steelhead, spring Chinook, bull trout, and other species. 🐟 Our agreement with COIC to de-couple and move their diversion has also enabled the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery and the US Bureau of Reclamation to carry out crucial restoration efforts and improvements at the old diversion. Their efforts opened up the creek here to improve fish passage and safety. 💧 These changes are part of a collaborative effort to restore Icicle Creek’s natural dynamics and ensure that it can support local fish and communities forever. Our team met in Leavenworth this week for our annual staff retreat. Everyone works across the state, so it was awesome to come together and discuss how all our projects support the WWT mission of protecting and restoring healthy rivers so that fish, farms, and communities thrive. 🙂 Program Director Greg gave a tour of our Icicle Creek project, where our partners Cascade Orchard Irrigation Company and Chelan County Government recently broke ground on a new high-efficiency irrigation pump station. This new pump station will help keep important flows instream to benefit steelhead, spring Chinook, bull trout, and other species. 🐟 Everyone loved seeing where the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery and US Bureau of Reclamation have improved an old diversion on Icicle Creek, too. Their efforts opened up the creek to improve fish passage and safety. We also visited the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery and saw their team at work, which was so cool! 🤩 The staff retreat was a full inspiring day. WWT signed agreements with the Cascade Orchard Irrigation Company and Chelan County in March to kick off a project that will restore more than 1.3 billion gallons of water annually to the lower part of Icicle Creek.
