Starting July 1, 2024, we are prepared to preemptively shut off power in areas that appear at high risk of wildfire as part of our Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program. Customers are urged to prepare for emergencies and the possibility of extended power outages during periods of high winds and dry conditions. “This is our last line of defense to keep communities safe from the threat of #wildfires. We understand shutting off the power can create hardships, so this is not something we take lightly. We urge customers to prepare for a PSPS the same way they would prepare for a hurricane or other hazard that can result in extended power outages,” said Jim Alberts, our senior vice president and chief operations officer. We do not intend to initiate a PSPS on July 1, 2024, only to be ready. This was the date set by us to have our internal systems, protocols and communication plans ready in the event of extreme weather conditions. We will continue coordinating and sharing our plans with public agencies, first responders, community organizations and customers over the summer. We will be ready to proactively shut off power only if necessary for public safety in the following areas: • Oahu: Waianae, Makaha, Nanakuli, Maili, and Kaena Point (approximately 2,700 customers) • Hawaii Island: North Hawaii between Kohala (below 18 mile marker) and Waikoloa, in West Hawaii between Kalaoa and Holualoa, and between Mauna Kea Access Road and Waikii Ranch (approximately 19,300 customers) • Maui: West Maui, Upcountry, parts of Central and South Maui (approximately 25,300 customers) • Molokai: parts of central Molokai (approximately 11 customers) Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gZuei6w4.

Today is World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th to put a spotlight on the environmental challenges of our time. This year’s World Environment Day theme, designated by the UN Environment Programme, is “Our Land, Our Future. We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with the land.” With more pressure being put on the planet and its resources, it has become increasingly important to speak up and care for the aina. #GenerationRestoration begins with all our kokua. There are many organizations throughout Hawaii who work diligently to restore our native land and reduce our human impact on the environment. So, whether you are volunteering at a clean-up or making sure to recycle properly, you can make a difference in saving our earth. Tag your favorite local environmental organization in the comments below! Learn more about World Environment Day 2024 at worldenvironmentday.global
