This week, The New York Times revealed the years-long journey to unveil the “twin” of the Waldorf Astoria’s iconic Spirit of Achievement statue in the small town of Hvolsvöllur, Iceland, near the birthplace of the statue’s groundbreaking creator, Icelandic artist Nína Sæmundsson. The Spirit of Achievement statue was perched over the iconic Waldorf Astoria New York’s Park Avenue entrance since opening day, symbolizing the innovation, ambition, and achievement in New York City and embodied by the Art Deco hotel. Sæmundsson, the first Icelandic woman to earn a living as a professional sculptor, was chosen out of 400 entries to represent the famous landmark when it opened in 1931 as the largest and most significant hotel in the world. When the hotel went under construction, the ten-foot tall statue was removed from the building for restoration and safekeeping. The cost of the scans was donated by hotel owner Dajia US to Iceland as a gift in honor of Nina Sæmundsson’s contribution to the hotel. Fridrik Erlings, who lives in Hvolsvöllur and coordinated the effort to make a second “Spirit,” says, ‘She’s placed in our mini-Central Park, big enough for us here. It’s looking southwest, looking straight toward the Waldorf, the original, with exactly 2,569 miles between them.’ Read more on the New York Times here: https://lnkd.in/eNuiwWNB

  • Demand for studio apartments is growing in New York City, the New York Post reports, “and the 35 studios at the Waldorf Astoria Residences are a prime example of how the market for studio units has evolved.” The Waldorf Astoria has worldwide name recognition, and even before the official launch of sales, the building received substantial interest from buyers looking for a home with luxury lifestyle services and amenities in the heart of Manhattan. Many international purchasers who own homes around the world plan to use their Waldorf Astoria Residence as a pied-a-terre. Ranging in size from 540 square feet to over 800 square feet and priced between $1.8 to $2.5 million, the residences “have large entry foyers, full kitchens and concierge closets — a feature integrated into the entranceway that allows porters to deliver packages, laundry and even room service without any personal interaction,” the Post noted. “You get the same elegant design and amenities of the larger residences in a smaller home,” Carolyn Sebba (CSP), Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Dajia US, the project’s developer, told the Post. “We’re seeing the most interest from international buyers who would typically stay at a hotel in the city. Many are from Israel, Sweden, Singapore and Paris, and were Waldorf guests from the past.” Read more in the New York Post here -> https://lnkd.in/ekkMkFtm
