👉 Who gets to speak on the internet and who doesn’t? 👉 Which voice rises to the top and which voice gets deprioritized? 👉 Why do some in majority groups, or even public officials, have the power to marginalize others? 👉 How does online hate speech translate to the real world? These were just some of the questions that inspired trust and safety professional Dylan M. to pursue a law degree and focus his career on the legal frameworks regarding online safety. In the first of a two-part blog, he tells us why he’s so passionate about the impact these issues have on equity and freedom of speech, and what he believes the immediate priorities should be for policymakers. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-VK35BN #ContentModeration #OnlineSafety

A heartening shift in stance from venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who last year called tech ethics and safety teams “the enemy” but now clarifies that he’d like to see online guardrails for his nine-year-old son. 💬 “I want him to be able to sign up for internet services, and I want him to have like a Disneyland experience,” the investor said in an onstage conversation at a conference for Stanford University’s Human-Centered AI research institute. Andreessen is now calling for competition in the tech industry and a diversity of approaches to content moderation. 💬 “The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material (AIG-CSAM) is outpacing our institutions’ capacity to adequately combat it,” wrote WebPurify’s VP of Trust & Safety, Alexandra Popken, in an article for Fast Company. Alex is calling for urgent action: ✅ AI developers must prioritize robust, secure systems that are resistant to misuse. ✅ Platforms need to diligently identify and report any abusive content. ✅ The government should ensure adequate funding for organizations such as NCMEC. ✅ Parents must be vigilant and proactive. “As parents, we seek to protect our children from the scary stuff. Fifty years ago, this may have been unsafe toys or stranger danger. “Today, we have an entire world of new potential harm to contend with: the internet. As the data shows, our children’s presence online doesn’t stop at social media or streaming – they’re browsing huge amounts of shopping and eCommerce sites, much of which is populated with user-generated content. “Brands and platforms need to reckon with this reality and ensure every piece of content is considered for a wide range of ages and moderated accordingly. If not, parents are ready to pull online privileges, hitting eComm retailers where it hurts,” says Josh Buxbaum, co-founder at WebPurify. Don't miss Forbes's coverage of our Kid Commerce report. Almost 20% of parents say their child has bought an item inappropriate for their age while shopping online. But on the positive side, 19% of parents said their child intervened to prevent them falling for a scam, and more than a third of parents said online shopping taught their kids money management skills. "On the one hand, this behavior really isn’t that different than my elementary school days of grabbing the Sears catalog and making a shopping list of everything I would buy if I had unlimited funds," reflects Nikki Baird. How do you avoid having advertising messaging associated with undesirable contexts? COO at Brand Safety Institute and former Head of Brand Safety and Ad Quality at Twitter AJ Brown explains in our latest blog. And no, the answer isn't all AI: 👉🏽 “You can’t ask a single machine learning model to reliably tell you whether a given piece of content is either adult or misinformation or violent or profane or sensitive," says AJ Brown. "Some of these areas are highly subjective, but even if they weren’t, you’re also asking the model to achieve a very broad mission and it’s going to be unlikely that it can do that reliably at scale." 👉🏽 “It’s not just about whether your ad can be screenshot next to objectionable content anymore. It’s about the kinds of environments that you cultivate or support, the voices that you amplify, the stances your brand or your platform takes.” Check out the full interview: https://lnkd.in/eeQcXuy2    #misinformation #interview #onlinesafety

👀 Online shopping draws in Gen Alpha. Roughly half of surveyed parents have observed their kids buying clothes online, and 32% note an interest in purchasing beauty products. 💬 "This seems to add credence to the recent 'Sephora Kids' phenomenon," says Sadhana B. of Kidscreen, in its coverage of our report, "which is seeing a growing number of tweens shopping at Sephora beauty and personal care stores. Meanwhile, fashion is already trending on kids TV, with shows like Style It Out (CBBC) and Geek Girl (Netflix) released in 2024; and popular platforms such as Roblox are also stoking an interest in fashion among younger gamers." You may think this signals kids scarcely in high school are growing up too fast, or at least too unsupervised online, but it isn't all bad news...
