Social connection is critical for a functional democracy. Deep canvassing – a two-way conversational technique based on story sharing, empathy, and connection – can move people away from bias towards a better understanding of complex social issues and support for social progress. Join us next Wednesday, September 4 to explore nine insights from Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition's recent toolkit, Transformative Conversations, and hear directly from experienced canvassers. Even if you're not canvassing door to door, you can learn to be a deep canvasser in your own life and everyday interactions! Register ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dfvDuY3D

Today we are highlighting the work of Fund to Foster Belonging Grant recipient Let's Talk Philly! Conversation Circles! In 2023, the organization hosted two events to connect communities while celebrating culinary traditions and spotlighting diverse arts and cultures from around the world. Over 100 attendees participated in the group’s first event, “Global Food Festival: Stories from Home,” hosted during Welcoming Week in September 2023. Their second event, “Multicultural Holiday Celebration: Festival of Arts and Culture” attracted another 100 people for a day of cultural performances, engaging workshops, delicious food, and joyous music and dance. The events were designed to build bridges among the diverse communities living in Philadelphia, immigrant and non-immigrant. Let’s Talk Philly! believes achieving welcome and a sense of belonging requires social and civic integration from every side.

As we advance further into the 2024 presidential election cycle, worsening rhetoric and violence continue to threaten American democracy and our political institutions. In a democracy, change can and should be achieved peacefully. Political violence undermines this foundational value and poses a threat to the stability and health of our nation. We condemn the use of violence against former President Trump and anyone who is the target of political violence. We firmly believe in the resilience and strength of the American people. In contrast to this act of violence, our nation's history is rich with examples of communities coming together to uphold the values of democracy, justice, and peace. Our thoughts are with the victims of the shooting, their families, and all those impacted.

Welcoming America's executive director, Rachel Perić, was in Paris on #WorldRefugeeDay last week. The #welcoming movement is truly global! Cities and communities across the world are, in Rachel's words, "ensuring that new and longtime residents alike can thrive and belong together, in abundance rather than scarcity." Read Rachel's full thoughts below.

Last week, I traveled to #Paris to speak with mayors about their leadership and role capitalizing on #migration as an opportunity for cities. Hosted by Paris Mayor Ann Hidalgo, in partnership with Bloomberg Associates, the gathering was an opportunity to share lessons learned and explore common themes that link city leaders globally as problem solvers and positive role models. “As a mayor,” said Mayor Hidalgo, "it is my role to unite people against the spread of hate and fear. There is no life possible without recognizing the humanity in each other.” I especially enjoyed sitting down with Deputy Mayor Beatriz Ponce de León and hearing about #Chicago’s community-wide efforts to be a #welcoming city and the importance of ensuring that new and longtime residents alike can thrive and belong together, in abundance rather than scarcity.  Joining the panel was also #Casablanca Deputy Mayor Abderrahim Outass, who shared how the city's current efforts are rooted in an historic arc as a city of trade with people from many backgrounds, and the legacy of that identity today in helping the city flourish, culturally and economically. I enjoyed learning from organizations working to address homelessness, and from smart leaders like Ruth Owen with FEANTSA, and see great opportunity in continuing to connect the dots between migration and homelessness to ensure that #status and #origin aren't barriers to shelter or basic human dignity. As #migration reshapes our world - and the #narratives that drive our politics - the #leadership of mayors - and of cities and towns - is crucial in ensuring our #values, not our fears, determine our future. A huge thanks to Linda Gibbs and Tamiru Mammo, and to the City of Paris, for the invitation to join this wonderful and inspiring gathering.
