“But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” - 2 Corinthians 2:9 Who knew that marching for racial justice in my small hometown in 2020, to spending hours at my computer strategizing on how to advance DEI in my school district, would lead to this! I’m blessed and overjoyed to share that I’ve been selected as a recipient of the Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service. Created by President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Airbnb’s Brian Chesky, this innovative scholarship combines financial aid, travel opportunities, and mentorship to help support the next generation of leaders. To be recognized on this scale is humbling, and all the glory goes to God for using a little Black girl from Central Jersey for a purpose much bigger than myself. I’m thrilled to use this opportunity to further embark on my journey of leveraging public policy to advance intersectional justice for young women and girls of color. Joy desired to join the GLOW cohort to gain skills that would help her scale her impact. She is an advocate for Women's and girls' rights, which led her to create Resilient Girl Initiative and Break the Silent Voices. Through the GLOW cohort, Joy aspired to make an impact in the lives of women and girls. Peru's cocoa exports have increased from $295 million in 2019 to $431 million in 2023 and is already up 122 percent in January-May 2024. Peru's cocoa producers have benefited by the surge in international prices but are also producing more and better. Higher yields, better post harvest handling and improved links to the market have resulted in higher output. Exports in volume have increased from 91 MT in 2019 to 113 MT in 2023, and up 30 percent in January-May 2024. There are many institutions working to improve living condition of small Peruvian cocoa farmers, an important one is USDA's MOCCA program (launched in 2019). MOCCA provides technical assistance, links producers to markets, provides improved genetic material, promotes financing to producers. Recently, we had the opportunity to visit, along with our partner Lutheran World Relief, an important producer/processor that has benefited from the program. Allima Cacao, is a dynamic agricultural cooperative that is developing new products utilizing all byproducts, such as the mucilage, contributing to the industry's circular economy.
