Updates

  • USDA NOP Update for Organic Imports Starting September 19, 2024, the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) will no longer accept the temporary filing code (999-999-T) in the ACE system for organic shipments without an NOP Import Certificate (NOP-IC). Non-compliance may lead to enforcement actions. 🔑 Key Points: - Obtain the NOP-IC before your shipment departs the foreign port. - Without a valid NOP-IC, your shipment must be reclassified or reexported. - Certified importers listed in the Organic Integrity Database are required for organic trade. Food waste is not just an environmental issue—it's a missed opportunity to do better. Imagine a world where every bit of food produced is used to its fullest potential. By harnessing the power of innovation and creativity, we can turn what was once considered waste into something valuable and meaningful. Consider this: - Nearly 40% of the food produced in the U.S. goes uneaten, yet millions face food insecurity (NRDC). - Upcycling surplus food and byproducts can reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, contributing to a healthier planet. - Brands that embrace sustainability and upcycling are leading the way in a new era of conscious consumerism, where waste is reimagined as a resource. The Upcycled Certified program is a key player in this transformation. By creating new, innovative products from food that would otherwise go to waste, we’re not just reducing our environmental footprint—we’re pioneering a future where sustainability is at the heart of every decision. Bee Friendly Farming Grower Spotlight: Sophia Pante of Pante Farms Located in Durham, CA, Pante Farms operates 35 acres of almonds. In support of their orchard and wildlife, Pante Farms offers bee-attracting flowering perennials, berries, ground covers and cover crops, pollinator friendly wildlife plantings, flowering hedgerows, flowering trees that provide nectar and pollen, “weedy” areas not managed but allowed to flower, clean drinking water for bees, and undisturbed/untilled ground for nesting, and much much more. “Joining the Bee Friendly Farming program was a natural choice for our farm since we have been pollinator friendly for many years. The legacy of pollinator friendly habitats was started in 1977 by Marlene Pante whose passion for flowers and gardening created refuge for native pollinators. Her husband Gene Pante farmed the land as natural as possible and passed those philosophies on to the next generation. Life is a balance and on our farm we strive to strike a balance with nature while also using modern or synthetic technologies to assist in orchard management. Providing forage, habitat, and water for pollinators is one way in which farms can help tip the scales toward nature and bring more balance to agricultural practices. The Bee Friendly Farming program has allowed this information and farming practices to be shared across a broader audience and we are happy to support the program and continue a legacy of pollinator friendly farming started on our land many years ago.” Pante Farms’ commitment to their crop and greater landscape is evident. Join us in celebrating the efforts of agricultural producers that focus on providing benefits not only to their crop, but to the greater ecosystem. • The Non-GMO Project, founded in 2007, was created in response to growing consumer demand for transparency and the right to know what’s in our food. With the rise of GMOs and a lack of clear labeling, consumers sought more control over their choices, particularly concerning health and environmental impacts. In today’s sustainability-focused food landscape, the Non-GMO Project Verified label remains vital. It promotes agricultural practices that support biodiversity, reduce reliance on synthetic chemicals, and foster long-term ecological health. For consumers, it’s a trusted symbol of transparency and a way to support food systems that prioritize environmental stewardship and informed choices. If you have any questions about becoming Non-GMO Project Verified, we can help! • Reducing food waste is one of the most impactful steps we can take toward a more sustainable future, and the Upcycled Certified program is leading the charge. By giving new life to surplus and byproducts, this certification not only helps companies turn potential waste into valuable products but also meets the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly solutions. Did you know... - 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted globally each year, which is about one-third of all food produced (FAO). - Upcycling just 15% of food waste in the U.S. could feed more than 25 million people annually (ReFED). - Consumers are increasingly aware, with 62% saying they want to support companies that reduce food waste (Future Market Insights). The Upcycled Certified program not only helps divert food waste from landfills but also adds value back into the economy, creating sustainable products that resonate with today’s conscious consumers. Join us in making a difference—let’s turn waste into opportunity. #UpcycledCertified #ZeroFoodWaste #Sustainability #CircularEconomy
