𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗳?🐋 In the deep blue, it's not uncommon to see a trio of humpback whales—a mother, her calf, and an "escort." But why is this third whale often present? Escorts accompany the mother and calf for several reasons. They might be protecting the duo from potential threats, like aggressive males or predators. Alternatively, they could be waiting for an opportunity to mate once the calf is weaned. This unique bond is just one of the many wonders of the ocean. Seeing it firsthand is an experience like no other! 🌊 📷 Matt Reichel #HumpbackWhale #WhaleBehavior #OceanLife #MarineBiology #WhaleWatching #WhaleSwim #MotherNature #OceanExploration

"If it's your first time in Aitutaki, welcome to the island, welcome to paradise. If it's your second or third time, I want to say: Welcome back home." During our whale swim tours, you can also immerse yourself in the local culture. In Aitutaki, you’ll experience some of the most beautiful church services we've ever seen. The locals practice singing all week, and it gives you complete goosebumps from start to finish. Our WhaleSwim tours are a holiday week full of reconnection with nature and the discovery of a completely different culture. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲? "Whales are very social creatures that travel in groups called “pods.” They use a variety of noises to communicate and socialize with each other. The three main types of sounds made by whales are clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls. Clicks are believed to be for navigation and identifying physical surroundings. When the sound waves bounce off of an object, they return to the whale, allowing the whale to identify the shape of the object. Clicks can even help to differentiate between friendly creatures and predators. Clicks have also been observed during social interactions, suggesting they may also have a communicative function. Whistles and pulsed calls are used during social activities. Pulsed calls are more frequent and sound like squeaks, screams, and squawks to the human ear. Differing vocal “dialects” have been found to exist between different pods within the same whale population. This is most likely so that whales can differentiate between whales within their pods and strangers. Whales also use their tails and fins to make loud slapping noises on the surface of the water to communicate nonverbally. The sound can be heard for hundreds of meters below the surface and may be a warning sign of aggression or a tool to scare schools of fish together, making them an easier meal." Come and join us for a dream holiday to learn and swim with humpbacks!
