Here’s a great thought about giving. We need to support charities in a way they need, not how we think they need it.
𝗜 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 - 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱? Here is my (very encouraging) summary: ➡️ The days of paying for “outcomes” are over. ➡️ Funders need to help charities be successful. ➡️ The sector needs unrestricted donations and trust to manage its own money. Paying for outcomes has forced the sector to become obsessed with the wrong type of growth. ➡️ When a company grows its customer base – it grows its income. ➡️ BUT when a charity grows its service users - it grows its costs. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 - 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗰𝘆, 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁. The need for “investment into the whole organisation” has never been clearer. To be most effective charities need to grow: - Resilience - Investment into systems and processes - People - their development and diversity - Impact - Connectivity into wider networks - Reserves 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗜 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘀: 👄 We all live in a world where the speed of change is now an expectation- so effective charities need to be agile. 👄 The more progressive funders (of all sizes) are focusing on how to help charities become more resilient. 👄 Having project money in the bank with a slither of core costs covered is NOT sustainable. ➡️ 𝗜𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 – 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆 - 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸...... 😕

Global South leaders face a funding desert. 260,000 global foundations — just 47 in Africa. 🌍 And only 583 grantmaking foundations in India 🇮🇳, none identified in Southeast Asia, with a mere 859 across Latin America. 🌎 Meanwhile, 95% are based in Europe and North America. 🇪🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸🇨🇦 (Which helps explain why local NGOs receive just 0.4% directly of all international humanitarian assistance.) That’s stunning. This Harvard research acknowledges the Global South data is incomplete. Plus, this study doesn’t include the everyday non-institutional #philanthropy in some countries. But this study still reminds us that we’re far — far — from achieving localization. It’s “a hierarchy, within which the Global North does the giving, and the Global South mainly does the receiving,” says Ayo Adene. “... we are stuck in a premise loop, like a bad dream, in which the only solution is to wake up.” What to do? Of course “philanthropy arose because of the gaps between the have and have nots,” says Animah Kosai. So ultimately, “it’s the global system and inequities that need to be addressed.” Until then: ❓ Can foundations transfer more assets to funders in the Global South? That way, locals decide how to grant it within their own communities. ❓ Can we start a joint venture in regions where foundations don’t exist? Then, there’s never a country without a robust and locally-led grantmaker. ❓ Can funders add local team members in the Global South? So at least grantmaking decisions are proximate — since the money is not. ❓ And at the least, can we fund more community-based #nonprofit leaders, from where much of the wealth was extracted in the first place? What other ideas do you have? It’s time to redraw the philanthropy map. Because real localization = local leaders 𝙖𝙣𝙙 local funds. 💪🏽💛 (𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦 — 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘺 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵: 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘗𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘋. Way to go Anne Marie! She is one of our WikiCharities board members that joined us last year.
Fueling startup growth through marketing, funding, and community building. Come along as I share insights and experiences along the way.
I am honored to be included in Utah Business 30 Women to Watch. A big thank you to Utah Business for celebrating the achievements and hard work of this dynamic group of women. It is especially meaningful to stand alongside my dear friends and fellow honorees, Becki Wright and Dawn R. Ramsey, who inspire me with their leadership. In Melanie's May Editor's Letter, she references the power of mentors: "Find a role model, be a role model." I echo her wisdom. There have been critical moments along my professional path when I've leaned on the example of my mentors. Over the past two years, this has been empowering as my mentors have broadened my mindset. I'd like to share two pieces of advice that have helped me lead with conviction: "Keep your hands on your own steering wheel." — Ruth Todd "Barriers are only beginnings in disguise." — Rebecca Yeung Thank you to the judges and the Utah Business team for this recognition. I hope you will find strength and deep resilience from someone who inspires you. Together, let's continue to support and uplift one another on the journey.
