Did a role model or mentor influence your choice of specialty? Research shows that women in clinical training who are exposed to women in leadership roles during a placement are more likely to choose that specialty in the future. As Clara Munro writes, that’s no surprise. However, she says we shouldn’t forget the personal cost our role models can pay to achieve their goals. Women As One is committed to increasing gender diversity across all specialties. A woman will spend an average of nine years in poor health – 25% more than a male counterpart. Closing this gender health gap could add as much as $1 trillion to the global economy by 2040. An average of 137 million women would be able to access full-time work and provide for their families. Most importantly, women would get the care they deserve. Everyone deserves effective, accessible, well-delivered healthcare. Women As One works to close the gender health gap by empowering women in cardiology to excel in their careers. Grateful for the opportunity Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc. to participate in an op-ed with Drs. Annette K. Ansong, MD, FACC and Tiffany Powell-Wiley centered on a critical issue: Medicare’s Part D policy and its impact on Black equity 🙏🏽 Obesity is an epidemic that ⬆️ the risk of cardiovascular disease and disproportionately affects Black Americans, beginning as early as childhood and adolescence. Black women have the highest rates of obesity or being overweight compared to other groups in the United States. The outdated policy set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) currently restricts coverage of essential anti-obesity medications that manage obesity, a chronic medical condition, limiting suggested options for treatment and ultimately limiting the improvement of cardiovascular outcomes. One reason for this is that even at the policy level, obesity is still viewed as a lifestyle choice rather than a chronic disease that may continue to persist without appropriate treatment. This must change! Often, CMS sets the standard, and as such it’s crucial for them to lead the way in providing affordable access to life-saving medications for obesity. The longer we fail to provide such coverage, the longer underserved communities, particularly Black Americans, will struggle with a chronic medical condition on their own. Together, we can advocate for change and ensure equitable access to essential healthcare for all. 🫶🏽 Check it out 👉🏽https://lnkd.in/gt_S-K6e #MedicareForAll #HealthEquity #BlackHealthMatters #ObesityAwareness #HealthcareReform #blackwomeninmedicine #womenincardiology #womeninmedicine

Women working in the healthcare field indicate disproportionate stress and anxiety around their caregiving roles at work and home in contrast with their male counterparts. Healthcare organizations can support women in medicine and prevent the leaky pipeline phenomenon that can be caused by burnout due to “double-duty caregiving”. Here’s how: 🔹 Provision of on-site childcare 🔹 Paid parental and sick leave 🔹 Cultivating an organizational culture whose norms support the use of paid leave Women As One accelerates the careers of women physicians.
