Women in Migration Network (WIMN) is an international network focused on the rights of women in migration.

About us

Women in Migration Network (WIMN) is an international network focused on the rights of women in migration. We create and promote human rights-based and feminist global migration policies in an era dominated by economic, social and political inequities and hostile systems towards people in migration. We lift up and support the experiences, voices and agency of all women in migration as essential changemakers on the road to a more just world. Our members are organizations and individuals working at the national, regional and international levels, advocating for women, migrant, human rights, and labor rights.

  • Lucy Turay, an activist, survivor, former migrant domestic worker in Lebanon, and founder of the Domestic Workers Advocacy Network (DoWAN), raised the voice of migrant women at the Stakeholder Consultation for West and Central Africa ahead of the (sub-) regional reviews of the GCM for Africa 🌍 Lucy underscored the importance of listening to the stories of survivors, the need for healing in the reintegration process, and the importance of having those with lived experience at the table in international migration governance 💪 Lucy is also a member of the Women in Migration Network (WIMN) board.

Scholar-Practitioner! Award-winning internationally recognized expert on migration, gender, and human rights.

➡️ What does gender-responsive migration governance mean? What does it look like? These are the questions that motivated me to develop the Gender-Migration Index (GMI). ℹ️ The GMI is a policy guidance tool that centers lived experiences of women, girl, LGBTQIA+, and gender diverse migrants by strengthening civil society engagement in international review processes. The index is based on an indicator system that ensures gender-responsiveness and migrant-inclusion in benchmarking policy, particularly in regards to monitoring and evaluation. 🚨The GMI has been referenced in various publications, most recently in the policy brief “Towards Gender-Responsive Migration Governance” by the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR). “Existing indicators that function beyond UN agencies, such as the Gender Equality Index and the Gender-Migration Index should be leveraged to encompass diverse gender in migration perspectives. Most importantly, the inclusion of the voices of migrant women is central to this process.” Find out more about what gender-responsive migration entails ⬇️ #migration #gender #justice #governance #gmi

  • Eduardo Canales, Eddie for all of us who loved and admired him, died on July 31st. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic human rights organizer and activist; advocating for migrants rights with all his heart and strength and supporting all along the Texas-Mexico border. Eddie was chairperson of the board of the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a WIMN member, who said this about Eddie: “Eddie, and the South Texas Human Rights Center have been leading voices in denouncing militarized border policies at the local, national, and international levels. His work has been instrumental in saving migrant lives by building relationships with local landowners to set up water stations to prevent migrants from perishing. He has worked with and pressured law enforcement entities to rescue those who have gone lost or stranded.  Under Eddie’s leadership, the South Texas Human Rights Center has developed strategic partnerships with research centers and international forensic teams to identify deceased migrants and reunify them with their families.” Thank you for the lives you saved, for the peace you brought to the families of missing migrants and for the uncountable lives you touched and inspired with your work and determination. You were an important friend and ally of WIMN. We will miss you, but you will also remain in all of us. Eddie Canales, rest in power!
