We at the Women's Refugee Commission know that as refugee women and girls work to rebuild their lives, they are also building #positiverelationships with loved ones, friends in their new communities, and in relationships. Access to sexual and reproductive health services and resources is one way refugees can learn how to develop #positiverelationships and identify signs of an unhealthy one. #wshd2024

Our colleagues at PAI recently did the math. U.S. funding for international reproductive health and family planning has been flat for 14 years, at around $600 million. Adjusting for inflation, funding has actually decreased by 30 percent. At the same time, the number of women of reproductive age in countries that receive aid has increased from 470 million to 800 million. Women's Refugee Commission is focused on making sure refugee women and girls get the support they need to make choices about their bodies, families, and futures and to be safe. More funding will save more women's lives.

Earlier this summer, we told you about a fact finding mission the Women's Refugee Commission took Santa Marta, Colombia where we teamed up with Fundación Tiempo de Juego to assess services available to adolescent girls. From our very founding, we have always started by listening to the lived experiences of the communities in which we work. Read more from WRC program assistant Ava McLaughlin Gagliardi about what she heard, saw, and what's next:

In Santa Marta and Cienaga, Colombia, the Women's Refugee Commission and Fundación Tiempo de Juego are using the "I’m Here" approach to ensure that adolescent girls are not overlooked in humanitarian response efforts. Through "I’m Here", they’re identifying girls who are often hidden within their communities, understanding the unique challenges they face, and creating targeted programs that address their specific needs.

Women's Refugee Commission asked our staff about people who inspire them - the voices of courage that keep them motivated in their work and in their lives. I'm adding Hadley Duvall, who shared her story at the DNC of sexual abuse and pregnancy at age 12. Women everywhere must have access to safe abortion, and the international community must prioritize sexual and reproductive health and rights and prevention and treatment of gender-based violence.
As part of our summer series, we've been sharing our #35Voices with you - remarkable people and groups who are part of the Women's Refugee Commission’s story. We recently asked our team who their personal voices of courage are–people who inspire them in this work on behalf of refugees. Who is your voice of courage? Comment with who inspires you!
