WyoFile is an independent, non-profit, news service focused on the people, places and policy of Wyoming.
About us
WyoFile is an independent, member-supported, public-interest news service reporting on the people, places and policy of Wyoming. The organization incorporated in 2009 as a Wyoming 501(c)3 nonprofit, and is a member of the Institute for NonProfit News. WyoFile’s mission is to inform and engage Wyoming through in-depth reporting in the public interest. WyoFile aims to reestablish the primacy of facts in Wyoming’s public discourse — to ensure that residents, community leaders, business leaders, politicians, agency personnel and policy makers all have access to, and faith in, the information they need to participate effectively in civic life and self governance. We believe that healthy democracies, resilient communities and effective governments all depend on a robust, independent, watchdog press — the first three simply can’t exist without the latter. Rigorous, factual journalism that holds individuals and institutions to account is a critical public service. We also understand that the old models our community has relied upon are no longer able to provide that civic cornerstone on their own. The root cause is economic. The result has been a profound and profoundly harmful disinvestment in news gathering in the state and beyond, and a loss of Wyoming’s self-sufficiency, locally grounded journalism and autonomy of information supply. We believe independent, member-supported, non-profit, non-partisan journalism of, by and for the people of Wyoming is the solution. Wyoming deserves the facts and a sustainable means of maintaining everyone’s access to them. WyoFile exists to provide both.

The legislative task force spent part of Thursday debating whether local building and zoning rules and fees are stifling development and pushing up housing costs. A Town of Jackson representative, however, said the municipality, which is under scrutiny, is mitigating impacts, not “shaking down businesses.” https://bit.ly/4bTiH0i

Make Liberty Win — a Virginia PAC, funded mostly from Texas — is sending mailers, knocking on doors, making calls and sending texts in support of "liberty-defending" candidates across the state. Wyoming and Idaho hunts aren't having much effect, but Montana's hunt continues to take a toll on Yellowstone National Park's long-running research effort and wolf-viewing opportunities. About 10% of the park's population was lost to hunting during the 2023-'24 season, causing three packs to disband. Story by Mike Koshmrl 📰 #wildlife #wolves #conservation #hunting #endangeredspecies

The controversial 1995 case of Daniel Johnson and the death of his two-month-old son attracted groups working to commute his sentence up until his death last week. He fought for decades to clear his name, and more legal action may occur even after his death. Advocacy groups worked to commute his sentence, arguing that new research on shaken baby syndrome proved his innocence.
