MEPs will vote tomorrow on Ursula von der Leyen's nomination for a second term as European Commission President. Now, the work begins for the next five-year legislative term. The European Parliament and European Commission must make #competitiveness and #sustainability the heart of their work over the next five years, particularly in agriculture 🚜 . To do this, the EU must: 1. Put agricultural innovation at the centre of the new European legislative term 2. Put innovation in circularity at the heart of their ambitions for 2024 - 2029 and ensure policy coherence to support the circular economy 3. Ensure high-quality organic-based fertilisers are given equal access to the European single market 4. Provide farmers with an enabling framework and concrete policy incentives to ensure access to and uptake of organic-based fertilisers

It's a great day for the #decarbonization of food production in Europe! Today we are launching a long-term partnership with PepsiCo in Europe to provide farmers with best-in-class crop nutrition products and advice as well as precision farming digital tools. This partnership will allow PepsiCo’s farmers to: 👨🌾 increase nutrient use efficiency (#NUE) 🌾 boost yields 👣 reduce the carbon footprint of their crops The focus will be on #potatoes, a key crop for PepsiCo, and then expand to other crops such as oats and corn. Approximately 1,000 farms across Europe and the UK will be included in the partnership. This collaboration underlines our shared commitment to build a more sustainable food system in Europe, while supporting #farmers through transition costs to ensure their livelihoods are not adversely impacted. Did you know that mineral #fertilizers produced in the EU and Norway already have a significantly lower carbon footprint (~50-60%) compared to most non-EU fertilizers? 📊     This is possible thanks to the use of the #N2O abatement catalyst that was first developed by Yara and then shared with the rest of the industry! 🏭     By transforming the production process of #ammonia – which is the base of most mineral fertilizers – using #renewable energy, we can further reduce the #carbon footprint of the nitrate fertilizer production process by up to 90%. 📉 These solutions will benefit crops while contributing to decarbonizing the food value chain and reducing climate impact. 💚    Learn more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gJUXCG_B

Last month, we celebrated the opening of our 24 MW renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industrial Park in Porsgrunn (🇳🇴). 🎉     As the largest facility of its kind in Europe, the new plant plays a crucial role in enhancing production whilst cutting emissions and boosting the EU clean #hydrogen market.    Yara has already delivered the first volumes of #fertilizers made from renewable #ammonia produced at this plant which, once fully operational, will produce around 20,000 tons of renewable ammonia annually, cutting 41,000 tons of #CO2 emissions from the site.     Fertilizers made from renewable ammonia hold the great potential to #decarbonize the whole agri-food value chain and boost the green transition, but we cannot do it alone. We need investments, a solid business case and a supporting framework for green production and green end-products. We cannot afford to replace the energy dependency with a new one on food and fertilizers. According to Eurostat, the imports of urea from Russia to the EU market have doubled in the past year compared to the previous period. 📈 As explained by Yara CEO Svein Tore Holsether, “It is a paradox that the aim is to reduce Europe’s dependency on Russia, and then now we are sleepwalking into handing over critical food and fertilizing power to Russia." This is dangerous not only for the EU strategic autonomy, but also for the climate, since European nitrate #fertilizers have on average 50-60% less #CO2 #footprint compared to non-EU ones. 📊 We call on the European Commission to safeguard the strategic autonomy of our #foodsystems and of the European industry.

We are proud to announce that Vibeke Rasmussen has been appointed as President of the Ammonia Energy Association (AEA)! 👏   As a global non-profit industry association that promotes the responsible use of #ammonia in a sustainable energy economy, the AEA plays a key role in the #decarbonization of ammonia for #fertilizers. It also advocates for the adoption of low-emission ammonia in new applications, including direct use as a fuel for electric power generation or maritime transport, and indirect use as a #hydrogen carrier and carbon-free #energy commodity.   Yara is contributing to AEA's work on the establishment of a global Ammonia Certification System to support the development of a market for low- and zero-carbon ammonia. This system will quantify the absolute #GHG emissions associated with ammonia production. In this way, future producers and consumers will be able to trade ammonia on the basis of relevant, transparent, and verifiable data.   Join us in congratulating our colleague and wishing her the best for her new role!
