Last Saturday, Youth Investors Corp celebrated its fifth annual program at the Earvin "Magic" Johnson Community Center and for surpassing our one-thousandth student milestone.
As the largest serving financial literacy program in Southern California, our work fighting for the American Dream is one only made possible with the support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the County of Los Angeles, Department of Parks and Recreation, and many more.
As our Executive Director Dylan Jin-Ngo shared during the ceremony, “We know that many young adults would not voluntarily spend their summer in the classroom learning about finances and taking exams. Completing this five-week bootcamp and passing our final literacy assessment are no easy tasks. The vast majority of our students come from at-risk backgrounds – one of the biggest challenges of this summer was actually navigating the inability for many to find transportation to and from their homes to our classroom sites.
We had one student who woke up early every morning to take a 1-hour bus ride to the nearest bus stop. Then, walk 30-minutes to our program site. All to take our one-hour class and make the journey back home. We had another student who would come straight to class after their morning In-N-Out Burger shifts. These are the stories of resiliency and true grit that define the ethos of our program and the American Dream.
That is why, standing here tonight, celebrating our fifth annual program in over nine cities and surpassing a life-time total of 1,000 students is so special. We started this work because we realized there was a need for it. We continue to do this work not only because there is so much still left to be done but also because you students – with your passion, joy, and dedication – make all the difference.”
