Sanchez and story by staff writer Nell Salzman: Mary Otts-Rubenstein, who has her own child with disabilities, is helping migrant families with medically complex children enroll in Chicago's Public Schools. But it doesn't get easier once the kids are enrolled because the system is overwhelmed. Otts-Rubenstein has been leading volunteer efforts for these children for over two months, stepping in where city officials have failed to identify and provide acceptable solutions for disabled migrants. Experts say children with severe disabilities born in the United States are already at a disadvantage in accessing a quality education, but migrant families with disabled children face especially daunting hurdles. ZUMA Video: Germany: Pro-Palestine Protesters Stage Flash Mob at Berlin Train Station . August 28, 2024, Berlin, Germany:A group of pro-Palestine protesters staged an unregistered flash mob inside Berlin's Main Train Station on August 28, 2024, calling out what they described as a "genocide" by Israel in Gaza. The demonstrators chanted slogans such as "Intifada revolution," "Intifada till victory," and "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" while raising Palestinian flags. The protest appeared to target both Israel and Germany, with some participants expressing anger towards Germany's support of Israel. Shouts of "Fuck you, Germany" were reportedly heard among the crowd. Berlin police temporarily detained the protesters to verify their identities. The flash mob, which took place during peak travel hours, drew significant attention from commuters and onlookers in the bustling station. Local authorities are investigating the incident, as the protest was not officially registered, and organizers could face penalties under German law. The event reflects ongoing tensions and the deepening divide over the Israel-Palestine war, with Berlin often being a focal point for demonstrations on both sides. With two-thirds of the country less than 20 feet above sea level and with rapidly growing urban centers, Bangladesh is highly threatened by climate change. By 2050, Bangladesh will lose 17 percent of its territory due to rising sea levels, resulting in the loss one third of the country's agricultural land. Projected sea level rise of 0.5 meters would contribute to millions of internal migrants by midcentury. If not addressed, these challenges could lead to a proliferation of climate-vulnerable refugee settlements, further straining already limited resources. In 2024, it remains one of the world's largest displacement crises. Almost half of the country's internally displaced reside in the north-west of the country alone. Years of crisis have upended the lives of children and their families across the Syrian Arab Republic, leaving 15.3 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 7 million children. Since 2014, over 12,700 civilians in north-west Syria alone have been killed by hostilities. The 2023 Syria-Turkiye earthquakes further deepened the suffering, claiming the lives of at least 4,500 people in north west Syria, including over 100 aid workers. Today over 80 per cent of the population in north west Syria, rely on humanitarian assistance to meet their most basic needs.
