Just arrived in NYC and got me thinking about not only mine, but many international students in the U.S. immigration journey and how even though they differ at their core they’re very similar. With that said, I’m of the firm belief that: Visa status, or lack thereof should not define talent. When I was an international student, copious amounts (I stopped counting after 250) of companies rejected me for jobs because they would not sponsor my immigration. So they deemed me not an asset worth “carrying the burden” to hire. Now, the same recruiters that either rejected me or ghosted me, are in my Linkedin inbox today. What’s funny is that, I had the same promise back then that I have today. The only difference is now some of that promise has been realized. In addition, now I have years of role experience at a company that believed in that promise, unlike those that didn’t and shut the door. Why do I share? There are so many companies turning down incredible assets in promise in the form of talented international students and foreign national workers because they don’t want to assume “the burden” of hiring to sponsor these individuals. And to that I say — what a miss. What a loss. Many international students have so much grit and determination. Understanding of more than one culture and multilingual+. Not only diversity of race/background/ethnicity but in thought as well. So much to offer. Not saying instead of locals, but in addition to. Life waits for nobody! Please always find time to prioritize life. I love how Marc Randolph shared that for 30+ years without fail every Tuesday he clocked out by 5PM. If you were having a “crisis” at work, best wrap it up by 5PM because he made sure he ALWAYS kept that evening for date nights/window shopping etc. time spent with his partner/bestfriend/love. That is what he defined as “success” for him — being there for his family. Lasting union with his partner and his kids knowing and “liking” him. I love that! And I resonate. There will always be more work — but, life? It waits for no one. Make sure it’s well lived and make sure those you love feel loved by you — give time.
