Let me first and foremost say, I LOVE events and see their value. I frequently attend events and won't ever fully stop going to them. In the summer of 2022, I averaged 3 events per week and connected a lot of that effort to the subsequent growth of the Scroobious brand and top-of-the-funnel awareness. However, I'd be lying if I said I haven't become more intentional and selective about which events I attend, and I'd be doubly lying if I said it hasn't been one of the better things for my personal and professional priorities. It sometimes feels like events have become a "rinse and repeat" feature in the startup ecosystem, both general cocktail hours, and of course, those focused on diversity. Allison Byers (and our whole team, hi Erica Kangas) and I frequently talk about how underrepresented founders sit and talk about why we don't get funding, while everyone else actually receives the funding. Ironically, March is Women's History Month, so this month is the biggest time of year for these rinse-and-repeat gatherings that lack true intention or value. While considering attending any event, I ask myself, "What am I getting from this?" Often, I can't point to anything concrete, and it's a signal to me not to attend. Though I'm not a co-founder of Scroobious, I'm close enough to the perspective of a founder to know that diverse founders aren't benefiting either. We're hearing the same infuriating stats, connecting with the same people, and not gaining any valuable connections or, better yet, money (investment or revenue) out of it. One of the reasons Scroobious structured our business model around working with service providers is that we contribute to every stakeholder's bottom line: intentional connections of value, measurable ROI, and a good time. So yes, let's stop with the events with women in the title but not in the planning or long-term outcomes. During my recent talk at Women In Tech Sweden, I shared a special moment when Charlie Caper became my Wing Person. This experience really showed me the value of the Wing People method. I first saw Charlie's magic in his "Stockholm: Not a Coincidence" on YouTube. https://lnkd.in/dqwQ3WTn His unique mix of tech and magic was so impressive that I invited him to perform at TEDxStockholm in 2019, where he was a big hit. But at a networking event, Charlie's skill at connecting people really stood out. I was at the after party of an event, and I really wanted to sit at the speakers table (but I wasn’t a speaker). Charlie, without even knowing how much it would help, brought me into the center of the action and invited me to join the table. He introduced me to the group in a way that highlighted me and what value I bring and made me feel at ease. This wasn't just a simple intro; it was a strong endorsement that let me meet some interesting folks without needing to sell myself. Even a Wing Woman needs a Wing Person! Thanks to Charlie, I didn't just make new contacts; I made meaningful #connections that fit perfectly with what I want to do. His natural talent as a Wing Person showed me how important honest #introductions are and reinforced why the Wing People approach works so well in networking. Inspired by what I shared at Women in Tech, I urge all of us to try and be more like Charlie. Day 2 in my intimate mastermind for trailblazing female founders / c-suite in the events industry and a wellness and wine retreat in napa has already been planned: Tell me you curated a group of world class women in events without telling me you curated a group of world class women in events 😅 There's so much competition (yes, still) within the events world - it's a hard pass for me. I will never encourage you to scale a business by stepping on others on your way to the top. Collaboration > competition Something that I really feel so strongly about is that we are a combination of the people we spend our most time around. So often we can find ourselves just slipping into a place where we're either in an echo chamber where everyone's saying the same stuff and every trend sounds the same. Or we find ourselves at a crossroads whereby we've rapidly outgrown our surroundings, and the perspectives shared on our timelines, in our network, in our immediate reach no longer serve the place we're headed. ^ I was having this conversation w/ a client this week who was feeling a lot of discomfort around how big her vision & goals were versus the problems and narratives surrounding her. As an industry leader, you need to be self-aware with what you are willing to entertain and let influence your own growth path. Where are you feeling limited right now and where do you want to expand? If you're a female leader in events and know you're meant for more, are feeling limited by your circle, are seeing the same 'trends' over and over and want to be the one SETTING the trends, you're over the constant competition and want to be EXPANDED by others who truly see you and want you to win.... As much as I LOVE connecting with my virtual mentor Jeffrey Davis and inner circle, including Jane Lee Rankin, Catherine Lash, Bernadette Barton, Fran Wescott, Katherine Miller, Marilyn Paul, Ph.D., I STILL thrive on face-to-face connections! It's with mindful intentions that I pressed "attend" for a couple of meetups in #Chattanooga this week. After running women's networking groups for ten years, imagine my surprise when I conducted surveys of the greatest benefits the members receive and learned that it wasn't sales, referrals, collaborations...
