Struggling to align your product roadmap with your cross-functional team's expectations?
While well intentioned - some of these frameworks often lead to roadmaps that lack focus and clarity of vision. In a company’s lifecycle - different things are needed at different times. For example - it might be that new sales are suffering and you need to solve the big pain points that are blocking the AEs. Or there is a new focus on profitability and so you need to automate internal workflows to save costs. In this situation - one needs focus on this particular area versus well intentioned but ineffective peanut buttering of resources. Generally - the most important thing is objective alignment and helping everyone at the company understand what the objective is and why. Once that is clear - everything else will fall in place.

Your client wants to break the rules of app store guidelines. How do you navigate this tricky situation?
It is tempting to want to break the rules on AppStores. And unfortunately the rules are fairly subjective - during my time at Zynga pushing hundreds of App updates - we would see a behavior or usage pattern that was technically disallowed go through in our competitors only to be rejected when we tried the same. While disappointing and frustrating - the better strategy is to focus on what you can control and building the best experience within the guidelines allowed. While you may get lucky and sneak an update or two through - you risk having a future update fail. In the long run - the cost of extra time and headaches is probably not worth it!

You're facing resistance from stakeholders on your UX decisions. How can you win them over effectively?
Presenting data whether in the form of deep user research or product analytics or user replay sessions is extremely valuable in terms of making your case for a UX change. Without data - it is mostly a matter of opinions which isn’t the best way to make a decision.

You're faced with community backlash over recent updates. How do you handle demands for a rollback?
Agree on acknowledging concerns. The first step is being aware of the concerns before they turn into a major storm. When my team and I ran FarmVille at Zynga - for any major releases, we always: - rolled out slowly starting with a group of users we could trust to give good feedback - monitored the forums, support emails and other customer response channels so we could understand the feedback in real time Having the product and engineering team listening and responding to concerns can often go a long way in defusing issues by itself.
