How do you become a business development specialist?
The journey I took: 1. Eight years in various advertising and marketing agency roles. Benefit: Understanding the capabilities that agencies sell and how to use them. 2. Two years client-side, vastly widening my perspective Benefit: Understanding the problems that clients need to solve and how agencies and other partners are selected. I'm a huge fan of real-world experience of what you are selling (from both the sell and buy side) to increase your effectiveness in business development. It can turn you from a salesperson to a partner from the prospects perspective.

What does a business development manager do?
Whenever I'm hiring I'm looking for one of two skills: 1) Brilliant project management. Can they understand complex sales processes and drive the organization to deliver at each step? Can they adapt when things go sideways? 2) Natural storytellers. Can they link our companies capabilities to clients' problems that need solving? Can they make the client feel like the hero of the story? Great business development organizations need both.
