How can you use counterfactual analysis to measure marketing effectiveness?
Digital marketing algorithms don't turn on or off cleanly. Emergent behaviors arise that make a totally clean read between geo markets (for example) unlikely. These include knock on effects of optimizations and poor geo identification of targets (e.g. mobile vs. customer id vs. browser IP, etc.) To maximize isolation, "rest" the markets for a week or so before starting your counterfactual. This will allow algorithms to settle down. At the same time, measure the actual marketing activity in tests and controls to get a read on how effective the counterfactual was. Something like 90% "shut down" in controls is typical.
