How can data analytics professionals transition into management roles?

I went from a Mid-Level Data Analyst with 5 years of experience straight to an Analytics Manager. One of the biggest things for me was pushing myself past my comfort level. I applied to a management role I wanted internally. When they interviewed me I really hit all the right things they were looking for. If you’re not applying and pushing yourself it’s going to be hard to get to that next level.

How do you adapt data cleaning to new domains?

Domain knowledge is extremely important when cleaning data. It's understanding all the nuances of the data from the stakeholders side as well as the production side. If I went into a Data Analyst job in Finance after working in Healthcare for many years I probably would be pretty terrible at data cleaning in general until I really understood the domain even though I am really good technically.

How can you use data visualization for your industry?

Data Visualizations aren't only for data people. They're also for frontline workers who need to know about patient retention, real time patient monitoring, tracking patient performance and benchmarks, and more! I worked in healthcare for years before I switched to the data side of things and it was useful even before really understanding the data behind it.

How do you manage data requests from partners?

This can sometimes take longer than any other part of the process. You actually need to get access to the data and see if it's possible to extract the data to begin work or accept a project. This is a crucial step, but can take upwards of a few weeks just to get access.

How do you share data quality results with stakeholders?

Final results can vary widely depending on how you clean the data! I would absolutely be documenting and discussing how you cleaned and transformed the data for that analysis. You'd think they wouldn't care and just want to know the final numbers, but I've found most stakeholders really want to know how you got to that conclusion with the data they provided.
