What techniques can leaders use to help team members overwhelmed by deadlines?
By definition "priority" is singular. "Priorities" often sounds like an oxymoron yet managing priorities is a top concern for most colleagues. Then we get the unexpected requests. To decide what should be tackled first I was taught the "Yes, If - No, But" Rule. It can sound like this: - "YES I can help with that additional project IF you're okay putting this other one on pause for a week?" - or - "No, I cannot get to that at the moment, BUT I can make time for it next Thursday afternoon.. would that timeline work for this project?" Offering a way forward with this rule helps the requester understand what other priorities are on your plate while also collaboratively coming up with a win-win solution!
