Since our founding in 1999, CFUF has remained at the front-line of addressing some of our city’s most pressing issues, including poverty, unemployment, father-absence and family disintegration. We maintain an unwavering focus on addressing the key challenges of Baltimore’s urban families by working to connect fathers to their children, creating opportunities for economic and financial security through work, and providing access to other key interventions and supportive services.

Central to CFUF’s mission is the belief that men—the most disconnected and underserved citizens in urban communities—who connect with women, their children, and the workplace are key to the restoration of stability and optimism. Consistent with this mission, our organizational goal is to assist individuals in regaining the personal power needed to benefit their families and communities.

Since 1999, CFUF has served over 26,000 vulnerable Baltimoreans providing the bridge that many have needed to attain stability, while emerging as a leader in the national conversation on responsible fatherhood and black male achievement. Today, we’ve grown to serve more than 1,500 men and women a year, securing over 6,400 full time jobs for them upon completion of the workforce development initiative.

Why focus on talent? On the surface, we recognized the well-documented struggles of social sector leaders to recruit and retain the contributors they need to scale the most effective solutions. We also appreciate the tremendous opportunity represented by the coming of age of Millennials—the largest, most diverse and, perhaps, most purpose-driven generational cohort in history. Ultimately, though, we invest in talent because we continue to be moved by a simple but fundamental observation:

Our greatest and most persistent challenges have been caused by people—they can and will be solved by people.

Baltimore Corps is a network powered by an organization. We believe that networks are best positioned to drive change because complex challenges require convening diffuse sets of actors to activate the widest reaching solutions.

Baltimore Corps builds robust, equitable pipelines to enlist talent in advancing Baltimore’s most promising social innovations.

Associated Black Charities was founded in 1985 to represent and respond to issues of special significance to Maryland’s African American communities. Concerned that needs within these communities were not being adequately addressed, a group of area ministers and businessmen came together. They envisioned an organization that would raise and distribute funds in support of efforts that targeted the needs specific to African Americans in Maryland. As a result, ABC was born with a $100,000 planning grant from the United Way, three staff members, a dedicated Board of Directors, and a cadre of volunteers and donors committed to giving their time, talent and resources to making a difference in Maryland communities.

Three decades later, we are still advocating for people of color in Maryland. We are leading the charge to close the wealth gaps that put so many African American families at a disadvantage in achieving the American dream. With the investment of individual donors, corporations, foundations and other public and private funds, we continue to raise and distribute funds to meet the current and emerging needs of African American communities throughout the state of Maryland.

We will continue to focus on economic equity because we believe that ultimately the outcomes benefit all Marylanders. We will push for systemic investments and innovative data driven strategies; we will influence and galvanize other organizations; and we will build the capacity of community-based organizations and nonprofits that are in pursuit of the same goal.

The Museum's collection was amassed substantially by major American art and sculpture collectors, a father and son: William Thompson Walters, who began serious collecting when he moved to Paris as a nominal Southern/Confederate sympathizer at the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861; and Henry Walters, who refined the collection and made arrangements for the construction of a later landmark building to rehouse it. After allowing the Baltimore public to occasionally view his father's and his growing added collections at his West Mount Vernon Place townhouse/mansion during the late 1800s, he arranged for an elaborate stone palazzo-styled structure built for that purpose in 1905–1909. The Equal Justice Council (EJC) actively promotes equal access to justice for Maryland’s most economically disadvantaged and vulnerable residents by increasing and diversifying MLA’s resources, financial, and otherwise, and serving as ambassadors on behalf of Maryland Legal Aid. The EJC is composed of managing attorneys from Maryland’s top law firms and other prominent members of the Maryland Bar and corporate community.

Throughout Maryland Legal Aid’s history, funding from governmental sources has never adequately met the demand for services. The EJC’s fundraising approach, therefore, focuses on securing funding from the private bar and business community. In addition to making personal contributions to Maryland Legal Aid, members of the EJC also obtain annual contributions from their respective firms and other significant entities within their communities. Members also work to increase pro bono involvement, participate in fundraising activities and educational programs, and cultivate relationships with foundations and corporations on Maryland Legal Aid’s behalf. EJC members also serve as hosts for recruitment events, including the annual Equal Justice Awards breakfast, which always features a prominent keynote speaker, and the Managing Partners’ breakfast aimed at leaders of the legal community. The EJC was established in 1997 by Maryland private attorneys.

The co-chairs of the EJC are Martin Himeles, Jr., Esq. (Zuckerman Spaeder LLP) and Lee Ogburn (Kramon & Graham, P.A.). Along with their EJC colleagues, the co-chairs develop and implement the overall volunteer fundraising effort, including the recruitment of EJC members statewide, and forge relationships with both government and private funding entities.

The National Bar Association, ("NBA") one of the preeminent bar associations in the world and its President Joseph M. Drayton, a partner at Cooley LLP, are pleased to announce the 2019 recipients of its "40 Under 40 Nation's Best Advocates" awards. The awards recognize the nation's top 40 lawyers under the age 40 who exemplify a broad range of high achievement in the legal field, including in advocacy, innovation, vision, leadership and overall legal and community involvement.

"These awards specifically seek out the leading lights of the legal industry, looking for those under 40 whose creativity, commitment, experience and strong leadership has helped them achieve success in an increasingly challenging legal climate" said President Drayton. "
The awards are given solely on merit and are awarded to commend those most deserving for their legal acumen, ingenuity, hard work, and community service, distinguishing them from their counterparts and proving them worthy of this special peer recognition. We look forward to this group continuing to exemplify that same level of leadership, activism and professional growth," he said.

"Since its inception ten years ago, the NBA's 40 Under 40 Awards have come to represent perhaps the very best professional award in the country for lawyers under the age of 40. Every year, the program grows both in terms of the quantity and the quality of the entries, and the excellence and diversity of practice areas of this year's 40 winners is proof that we are truly capturing the country's brightest," according to Aubrey "Nick" Pittman, Esq., Chair of the 40 Under 40 Awards. "The thing the awardees have in common is that they each signify a commitment to the practice of law, community service, and social change," said Pittman.
