Media Makeover: Improving The News One Click at a Time
TED Books
On average, many of us spend more than 70 minutes per day consuming news. That’s double the amount of time we spend caring for loved ones. How is it that we know so little about something that is such a big part of our lives? Alisa Miller, CEO of Public Radio International and media and technology leader, urges us to be aware and take control of the news if we want a more accurate picture of the world. How is it that we know so little about something that is such a big part of our lives? Alisa Miller, CEO of Public Radio International and media and technology leader, urges us to be aware and take control of the news if we want a more accurate picture of the world. "Media Makeover" is an entertaining and informative bird’s eye view of how “news” is made, what is missing from our news diets, why certain types of content are harder to come by, the implications for our society, and perhaps most importantly, what can be done about it. "Media Makeover" is a must-read for anyone who wants to be better informed and to take action: consumers, innovators, technologists, journalists, and media leaders alike.

StoryAct was one of 18 projects supported by the Knight Prototype Fund, which provides support to ventures in the early stages of exploring media and information ideas... StoryAct will integrate into news stories concrete ways for readers to take action on the issues covered in those stories. PRI expects these actions to fall into five main categories: learn, share, organize, contribute and suggest." The tool will roll-out in early 2015 and be integrated into story pages on PRI.org.

PRI wins National Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Journalism
PRI, with partners the Center for Public Integrity and Global Integrity, ranked and graded every state on 330 different indicators of government integrity across 14 categories, from lobbying regulation to redistricting and public access to records. PRI, with partners the Center for Public Integrity and Global Integrity, ranked and graded every state on 330 different indicators of government integrity across 14 categories, from lobbying regulation to redistricting and public access to records. Public Radio stations used that information to explore the history and risks of corruption in their state governments in a series of radio and digital stories. In addition, PRI supported the stations with a social media campaign and a national project website.
Sixteen public radio stations partnered with PRI in this two-year, $1.5 million investigation: New York Public Radio; KPCC/Los Angeles; KERA/Dallas; WHYY/Philadelphia; WAMU/Washington, D.C.; WGBH/Boston; WBUR/ Boston; WLRN/ Miami; KUOW/ Seattle; KCFR/ Denver; Oregon Public Broadcasting; WFAE/Charlotte; WVXU/ Cincinnati; KCUR/ Kansas City; KUT /Austin; and New Hampshire Public Radio. These stations aired more than 90 stories, talk show discussions, and town-hall forums. This unique partnership enabled local stations to treat the Investigation not as a “one-day” news story, but as a resource to add context to their political and governmental coverage throughout 2012.
The State Integrity Investigation has led to reforms in six states so far, with reforms proposed in another ten. Public radio coverage of the Investigation reached an audience of more than a million listeners while total media coverage reached over 17 million with over 1500 stories.
