The WKU Alumni Association and its partners in the Office of the Provost, Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning and each academic college have been honored with a Silver award in the category of Leadership: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives for the First Generation Alumni in Residence Program launched in November 2023.

This program was one of 486 exemplary entries for bronze, silver, gold and Grand Gold recognition selected from 4,223 global entries. Winners are chosen for overall quality, innovation, resource use and impact on the institution or its communities, such as alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff.

On Nov. 7, 2023, five distinguished first-generation Hilltopper alumni engaged with current WKU students, sharing their unique journeys and accomplishments. This initiative, aligning with WKU’s commitment to first-generation student success and its inclusion in the First Scholars Network for 2023-2024, saw these alumni visiting multiple classes, engaging more than 100 students each, and culminating in a “master class” presentation. Aimed at fostering community and enhancing the success of first-generation students, who constitute one-third of WKU’s enrollment, the program preceded National First-Gen Day on Nov. 8, offering further alumni involvement.
