How can you create HR policies that boost employee engagement?
Every person that works in your organization deserves Dignity, Safety, and a Voice. Dignity means listening to what they have to say - suggestions, complaints, criticisms and sometimes even praise. Safety means protection from harm, and the authority to speak up when they need to or want to. Voice means a variety of ways you can hear from them - not everyone approaches things boldly, and sometimes they may not even speak the same language that you speak. This is where we start. Where we go from here is to create policy that is human. Understood by humans. Seen as reasonable and clear by humans. All the legalese and “may result in discipline up to and including…” doesn’t need to be in everything that is put in front of them.

You want to build your team's morale. How can you use communication to achieve this?
Tell them everything. Over communicate. As you roll through your day and your week, think about how you’ll share the things you learn, hear about, and what’s coming up. Make it so they are never surprised. Be as transparent as you can be. There is no victory in hoarding information. They’ll have better ideas than you about what to do, sometimes. Then you thank them for that. It’s your responsibility to make sure they have a great career experience while they work with you.

You're negotiating a contract. What are the most common mistakes to avoid?
Remember that the person sitting across from you has goals, responsibilities, people they care about, and perhaps even anxiety about what you’re doing together - just like you. The best outcome is when both parties get as much of what they want as they can. Scorching the earth and ending at a place where one party gets most everything isn’t the outcome or the reputation you want.

How can FM professionals collaborate with HR to improve employee satisfaction?
Make things make sense. If you have to employ a restrictive policy, tell folks why. Ask them how to make things easier for them at work. Believe that people want to do well, and work to create an environment where they can do that. Make it safe to speak up, and give them some control over how things are done (as much as you can). If you get those two things right, employee engagement takes care of itself.
