"Although the journey is far from complete, research on problem-solving cognition over the past thirty years has evolved from an unscientific, intuition-driven process to one that is based on solid scientific principles of analysis. Throughout this paper, I have attempted to highlight some of the research that has led to information which can and should be put into practice. Now it is up to educators and instructional designers to apply this new found knowledge in designing instruction that aids word problem solving performance. Hopefully, it will not take another thirty years for some of these instructional tactics to be implemented in the classroom." (Guetschow, 1996).
