Citizens Mounted Unit-22 is an all-volunteer group of men and women who donate their time assisting law enforcement officers, mainly during the summer months, when Jackson Hole’s population swells dramatically. The unit’s duties include crowd and traffic control at events such as the Memorial Day parade, Old West Days, the Independence Day parade, the Teton County Fair, weekly Farmer’s Markets, and many other special events. Members of CMU-22 also regularly patrol around downtown Jackson.

The program has been very successful for the Jackson Police Department. Besides helping to police the community and assist residents and visitors, the members of CMU-22 have been able to see and share the challenges faced by sworn officers every day. Perhaps more importantly, CMU-22 has saved the town and county many hours of overtime equaling thousands of dollars and freed up officers for other duties and time to be with their families.

CMU-22 is a highly visible presence when help is needed and an excellent way to promote “Western Heritage, Community Pride” and the roots that make Jackson Hole so unique. While the horse may seem a symbol of times past, the use of horses can be highly effective in a variety of law enforcement situations. The magnetic presence of a horse also attracts people who simply want to touch the horse and then visit with the rider. This interaction between people (especially kids), horses, and the police, instills positive impressions that are long lasting.
