Eliciting preferences from patients is a skill. The goal is to get beyond, “I just want to get better.” In my experience, asking what’s them what’s important & having them prioritize what’s important across a range of dimensions can help design a care plan addresses/respects their needs: financially, socially, professionally, physically, sexually, emotionally, and spiritually.
