What are the signs that your writing voice is evolving?
The story and the words seem so clear in my mind. Then I start writing. The first two or three drafts show the gaps. Then I do more homework—and you can never do too much homework—-and it gets clearer in content, context, and expression. Drafts 4 thru 7 get it all out on the page. By now, the story has evolved, shown itself, risen from the dross. Then comes the editing. Be viscous. No word, no phrase, no sentence, no paragraph is sacred. Save those words. You may use them later. But not in this version. By my 10th draft, I’ve parsed, cut, added, molded that, finally, the story is clear and flows, clear as a country stream. Now it’s ready for others to read.

How can you develop a trading style that fits your personality and goals?
As a Professor of Corporate Finance at Boston University and a former Portfolio Manager overseeing $10B of fixed-income investments, I offer this advice on trading: Don't. Be it stocks or bonds, the vast majority of individual investors have neither the knowledge, skills, resources, or temperament to trade. Portfolio returns also show that the majority of advisors and institutional investors lack that skill as well. In general, the higher the turnover rate, the worse the portfolio performance. For equities, long-term buy-and-hold investing, while sounding a bit dull, offers the best returns over time. Invest in a general market index fund, reinvest the gains or dividends, and make regular periodic investments. And leave it the hell alone.
