    This essay uses critical discourse analysis to critique the first-person narrative accounts of ex-gay reparative therapy experiences posted to the “Beyond Ex-Gay” website and contextualizes those experiences using Victor Turner’s concept of liminality as a critical paradigm. The themes emergent from these narrative accounts are categorized as pre-liminal, liminal, or post-liminal, a construct that is predicated upon definitional understanding of liminality as a process by which an individual undergoes change through the performance of ritual. The emerging themes are discussed individually and contextualized within the liminal paradigm, resulting in the assertions that, amongst former ex-gays, pre-liminal rites are attempts at confronting dissonance, that the liminal period culminates in a “ritual of acceptance” of one’s own sexual identity, and that identity consonance is acquired in a post-liminal stage, leading to a negotiated identity as simultaneously Gay and Christian.
