Development of a compact diesel fuel vaporization and mixing system was the focus to meet the stringent packaging constraints. The fuel vaporization and mixing system is comprised of a fuel injection system, catalytic monolith and mechanical mixer. Development of a compact diesel fuel vaporization and mixing system was the focus to meet the stringent packaging constraints. The fuel vaporization and mixing system is comprised of a fuel injection system, catalytic monolith and mechanical mixer. A fuel reformer, and other catalysts were positioned downstream of the fuel vaporizer system. A 44% reduction in total fuel vaporization / mixing path length was achieved using an optimized assembly. The fuel reformer uniformity targets met design specifications and the reforming efficiency using the fuel vaporizer met the design targets.

The invention includes options of injecting into a multipath monolith substrate and of emplacing blocking material during monolith construction. Either catalyst coating material or coat-blocking material can be injected. Blocking materials allow the use of machinery for ordinarily non-selective processes, such as machinery for dip coating. Both multipath injections and pre-placed barriers can be used in a single partial coating process.
