Our founders, Kaleb Thornhill (Former Division I student-athlete & current NFL Front Office Executive) and Travis Key (Former NFL player/Division I student-athlete & current Packaging Professional at Westrock), rose above their under-resourced backgrounds to experience great success ON and OFF the field. Travis and Kaleb’s success is highly attributed to influential mentors throughout their life and they are on a mission to serve others to ensure individuals can find success in their future endeavors as well.

The Riester-Davis-Brody Award recognizes lifetime achievement and the top innovators in food packaging technology. It was established in 1986 to memorialize Don Riester (American Can) and Rees Davis (Continental Can), and it was amended in 2015 to recognize the many contributions of Aaron Brody (Packaging/Brody Inc). These three individuals were pioneers in our field who helped found the IFT Food Packaging Division. http://www.ift.org/membership/awards-and-recognition/additional-ift-awards.aspx

    Criteria
    • The awardee will be a member of IFT Food Packaging Division or will have been a member during a majority of his/her tenure of accomplishment.
    • The awardee will be selected by a jury consisting of members appointed by the executive committee of IFT Food Packaging Division.
    • The award will be based solely on achievement in food packaging technology in which the awardee was the key person.
    • The award will be for continuing achievement and not for a single event.
    • The achievement may be in research, development, teaching, communication, commercialization, etc. It will not be for service in IFT Food Packaging Division. This criteria does not preclude long time volunteers in IFT Food Packaging Division, many of whom can be regarded as good candidates.
    • Achievement is innovation in action: concepts that function; developments that advance food packaging; research that leads beyond current frontiers; ideas that spark students; etc. A flood of impractical ideas is not achievement. The application of science to food protection through packaging is imperative.

Mike Richmond and Brian Wagner, co-founders and two of the business partners of Packaging and Technology Integrated Solutions (PTIS), were named among Packaging Strategies’ 2008 “Most Influentials.” This year’s “Most Influentials” make up the fifth-annual such list assembled by Packaging Strategies, a packaging analysis and information company. Portage-based PTIS joins such heavy hitters as Estee Lauder and Kraft Foods in receiving this honor.

In identifying individuals and companies that have most strongly influenced and contributed to the packaging industry, Packaging Strategies was especially mindful of the state of the economy and how leaders in packaging have been successful even in difficult financial times. Packaging Strategies recognized PTIS for its focus on collaboration across the value chain, and for pursuing this focus even when others in the industry were skeptical of its merits.

“We knew we could help brand owners produce better packaging more efficiently, and that’s something that can survive a challenging economy,” said Richmond. “It’s extremely satisfying to be honored for our work and our foresight, especially by an organization as well-respected as Packaging Strategies.”

Added Wagner, “We started with a vision of packaging getting a ‘seat at the table,’ and our 30-plus PTIS associates and all of our valued clients have collaborated to make that vision a reality.”
