My efforts and good grades resulted in an appointment to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO from my US Congressman William A. Steiger. Unfortunately, my eyes were not "pilot qualified" so, believing that I would not get what both the military and I wanted out of the experience, I asked Congressman Steiger to give my appointment to another candidate.

Congressman Steiger suggested that I enroll in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. I did know that I wanted to study engineering, and with the Congressman's help, good grades and SAT scores, I received an acceptance to Cornell University's Engineering School. As a result, I believed that Cornell was a better choice for me than Embry-Riddle.
