You're a team facilitator and your team's feedback is out of control. How can you regain control?
If you're an Agile team, you may have run a retrospective at the end of your Sprints or Iterations. Here's my advice to set expectations: - Do not simply run a retrospective such as (what went well, what didn't go well) - Set the expectation that while a retro can be a mechanism to vent, we need to work towards improvement. - If the team provides negative feedback, how can we improve the situation? It's okay, as the facilitator, to not have all the answers. Follow-up is essential to encourage continuous feedback.

How can you identify the root cause of missed deadlines?
Let me start with some anti-patterns that I have found that may help in the moment, but actually don't prevent missed deadlines in the future: - Overtime. You will simply burn people out and it may be an indication of bad planning. - Micromanaging IC's. You will kill trust - Not assessing risks. You aren't looking ahead and anticipating impacts on your team. What has helped prevent missed deadlines? In my experience, the more I've included my team in the requirements, planning, estimating, and strategizing processes the greater buy-in and commitment I've seen to meet goals and deadlines.

You're having trouble getting your team to collaborate. How can you use team facilitation software to fix it?
I suggest focusing less on the facilitation software and establishing a safe space for your team to collaborate openly and honestly. I'm a big fan of customizing retrospectives, workshops, and meetings for the occasion and the topic(s) you wish to address as a coach to the team. Facilitation software can help with ideas, providing templates and techniques to help you drive toward the outcome you seek. But first, think about the outcome you are looking for, the positive direction you'd like to take them, and creative ways to help the team collaborate authentically.

How can facilitation help creative teams achieve their goals?
"Yes, and.." It is a good rule of thumb for improv and a great technique to show appreciation for an individual's contribution, but add onto and encourage others to voice opinions and creative ideas. Encouraging a safe space is important, but also allowing the space to breathe. Sometimes, asking a question and allowing a few seconds of awkward silence is enough to allow people to think and respond. Get people comfortable with silence.
